Sign up with Google Sign up with FacebookQ: got into an incident yesterday.
after work I started to ride home on my Mt Bike and this parked car decided to pull out in front of me.just as I was about to ride past this car.
didnt even look to see what was coming.
so as i was nearing the traffic lights I tapped on his window all I was going to do was tell him to use his eyes.as soon as I tapped on his window he got out of the car and was in my face swearing at me in Chinese.he waved his sun glasses in my face,I cursed at him told him to F off and he spat at me.
this guy went crazy.
I suppose I should not have said anything at all.
You should of just keyed his car... as you biked past and then left.
You can't talk sense in to an idiot.
I wish you dinged his car and then told him to F off if he demanded compensation.
hi2u:
Because he deserves to have his car damaged for driving like an idiot. With you and your bike remaining unharmed of course. That part probably didn't come across so well.
Glad you didn't get hurt
Did i ever ell you about the time removed the keys from some dickhead that tried to run me over (why I do not know as im such a nice guy)
I through the keys on the back of a passing tricycle and buggered off quickly
wonder if he ever got the keys back ?
No introspective capacity as per the norm.
Caliban saw his face in the glass for just a second there and it was enough to send him completely livid.
effectively a lawless society. there may be legal repercussions depending upon one's place on the food chain, but when I say effectively lawless, I mean in the sense that legal consequences for one's actions does not seem to cross anyone's mind here.
On a near daily basis we see instances of people in this country doing whatever they get the impulse to do whenever they like. Being aware of this keeps me on my toes. I still flip-off and yell at any moron who acts in a manner that I don't care for. But, I'm also carrying a little equalizer that let's just say is near to hand always.
My Chinese friends think I should not let people's actions bother me, and also even if it does bother me, I should just keep my mouth shut and let it pass. I can see their point, but I can't seem to reprogram my Operating System to that parameter. I rarely tell them this, but I think they, and basically all Chinese people are pussies and let anyone do anything to them. I also think this has been going on since 4ever and was particularly noticeable during the CR when they would kneel and let their fellow citizens physically beat them and humiliate them over and over treating them as the lowest form of life.
I think I will keep listening to Zapata~
'I'd rather die on my feet, than live on my knees'
so, anyway, u did the right thing in calling him on his stupid maneuver. If more people would speak up we might not have 300 senseless traffic deaths a day on chinese roads.
RobRocks:
man you just hit the nail on the head.what you have written I feel the same way.
Sinobear:
Another way to look at this is through perspective: I was almost ran-into by an e-bike in Guilin. I was furious because I was almost hit.
Later in the week, I witnessed a Chinese guy almost get nailed by a different a55hole on an e-bike on the sidewalk. He was laughing afterwards because he didn't get hit.
Perspective.
Burak43:
This. I have a very hard time letting go of the bullshit and injustice I see everyday here, even if it doesn't affect me directly. I try to make myself stop caring so much, but it's difficult.
The usual unwritten rule in China is that the driver of the more expensive vehicle will pay compensation to the driver of the cheaper vehicle as he is expected to have more money and to "preserve harmony".
This except if one is a foreigner, then the foreigner is always wrong.
RobRocks:
my friend was telling me that although he was in the wrong,I would always be wrong.even though I did nothing wrong.
You should of just keyed his car... as you biked past and then left.
You can't talk sense in to an idiot.
The guy is obviously a moron... Maybe he had no idea he was close to bump into you, and felt like he was unjustly aggressed... Or maybe he knew but would not acknowledge a mistake. Who knows !!! You avoided an accident, that's good.
As a rule, when I ride a bike, I *always* look when I go behind a car, assuming I am invisible yet made of fragile meat, China or not China. Defensive driving
ScotsAlan:
I do the same on my ebike Dr M. I always assume that car will cut me up, or that pedestrian will walk straight in front of me. I would often be faster walking.
Every day, Rob. And more than once every day. If I wasn't doing what the good Dr suggests I'd be dead over and over again.
In fact, I was only pondering this morning (after a near death experience on my way to work) what the real reason is behind their driving patterns.
I came up with a number of reasons why they drive so incompetently but always came back to the one denominator. Stupidity. Sure, all the other reasons are contributors, but stupidity is the driver. Hahaha...pun!
Anyway, you're alive! Cheers mate!
ScotsAlan:
Spot on Royce. Stupidity. How can anyone do what many of the drivers do here without thing of the possible results. Just shear stupidity. It is just beyond belief how people of Chinese culture drive.
'Car driver is godlike creature in China'.
I always try to convince Chinese drivers, I'm MORE-god than them. I don't hesitate to stop cop's car, while I'm crossing the road over the 'God-like-territory' (pedestrian crossing).
In my city, cop was giving me some gestures, while he had to wait for me to cross the road. He obviously wasn't aware I don't understand China-man.
Got new tubes for my road wheels last week, and .......tomorrow, I'm coming out to China's traffic with my 'sail boat on wheels'.
Wish them luck!
royceH:
Yeah, I remember you telling us about that plan. Please post a photo. Quick, before it's too late!
Good luck!
Burak43:
I like leading with my umbrella, works very well for ebikes and most cars. Crossing the street? Put your umbrella out like a barrier in front of you, but hold it so if they hit it you won't damage your hand. So far all have stopped, but use caution.
icnif77:
I buy new umbrella every 5Y once, because I usually lose it next day.
Photo of my machine?
I bought road tubes - shady ones in HK. The firm of the tubes is some 'Chino-German-Englo-made-up-name' firm, so I'll 'observe' inflated tires for few days. Tomorrow is the day for the-initial-ride.
I'll get somebody with camera to snap pic of the beast.
Tech. data: Specialized road Ti/Al frame with Shimano Dura-Ace set up, Selle Air seat, Profile Aero Base Handlebar, Continental Gator-Skin tires, total weight 7,1kg.
Summer gloves, Sidi Ergo carbon shoes, cycling cap in yellow, no helmet.
icnif77:
I'm convinced, riding with helmet won't make me live longer. I looked at the road helmets in HK, buTT.....they sell them 30% more expensive than US Performance Bike, and to purchase there ...is too complicated.
I've never had helmet, riding 50 miles (almost) daily in US, and I still... 'knock-knock'... kick.
Why I got so many downs? Ohhh, I forgot to capitalise word 'god'. This is religious 'war' then.....LOLOL
icnif77:
I'm back from Kaifeng's farms. Got lost in the meantime, buTT farmers direct me toward my flat....after 6h on the wheels I need an ice cream and 'tender service'.
Its a good thing you were not having a BCD Rob. That could have been nasty.
But this is another example of how insecure our satus is in this country. Get into a battle with some random yob, and you might be chucked out faster than you can say due legal process.
Well done not escalating the situation
Oh man i dream of that. I knock on peoples windows all the time. They either roll down the window bowing their head saying " sorry sorry sorry" or they straight up drive a way.
A few weeks ago huge traffic jam heading onto the bridge. So chinese being chinese they drive on the shoulders trying to gain a few meters. if im in a good mood i let it slide. This day i wasnt so i blocked the lane. Usually when i do this the chinese dude in my lane behind me doesnt realize what it going on so he speeds up to take my spot. but this time the dude behind me knew what as what and he gave me space while also blocking them in. He was awesome. Anyways the people i was blocking are losing their god damn minds. I live that theu can be such pricks but still get mad at people for taking offence. Anyways he had like another 3 guys in the car and thought he would be tough and knock on my window. Finally! Someone with balls! I can respect that. So he gets out of his car and i get out and i say " you got a problem? " Hahaha he looks down and said " no problem!" and got back in his car to get emasculated by his peers.
I blocked it in silence the rest of the way.
You dont always need violence. Winning feels great no matter how it comes.

I've noticed that when I drive back home in Scandinavia, passing parked cars I have started lifting my foot a bit. Driving for a while in China has simply made me paranoid to the fact that anything can happen at any time, and that people certainly don't use the mirrors.
unfortunately, many chinese drivers' are like dynamite ready to go off if you touch their car, even though they try to run everyone else off the road. Usually, they won't take responsibility but will demand others to do so.
if confronted just tell him your going to call the Jing Cha and wait for one to drive by. Take photos of his car and plate but remember, he can explode at any moment.
