I would think the answer is "NO", but are there any precautions to take (other than normal hygiene) ?
It appears local language media is telling a vivid story of the victims so far, only having been in contact with pigs.

(in my opinion) No need to worry. Since the massive outbreak of SARS, China became much better at handling these situations directly rather than hiding them. And as far as I know there are only a few cases in the south. If you really worry, you can wear an activated carbon mask that will block out most germs. Panic NEVER helps. Good Luck.
don't eat any meat in these days, and drink water with radix isatidis,it is sold in every supermarket.
crimochina:
what the hell does an airborne pathogen have to do with meat?
As far as I'm aware, there has still been no human to human spread of H7N9, all the reported cases have been people who have been living or working closely with large numbers of chickens. So unless you fall into that category no need to panic.
The time to take individual action will be if / when the virus mutates and can spread human to human.
very simple. unless you have very young children you shouldn't really worry. it is just the damn flu.
this "pandemic" is going to return for 1 reason and 1 reason only, money. it is relatively easy to keep the body healthy so that the body can fight off the flu. vita c and zinc everyday. less drinking and smoking, to name a few things you can do. but the way to make money is to keep people weak and afraid. people who are young and healthy have nothing to worry about. your body will fight it off in 2-3 days.
i never had a flu shot, and never had to take a sick day.
isn't it amazing how the bird flu has replaced the food scandal in the headlines.
:
You're right about it and I would add this: avoid chicken and pig. Actually avoid any meat. Soon we won't be able to eat anything without fearing contamination whatsoever. Yet vegetables in a right combination would supply you with whatever the body may need including the C vitamins and zinc. I am not a vegetarian, I like meat, but I am in China and I know that I must care for myself more than ever since here nobody gives a care for you at all. Here Government has proved beyond any endeavor how much do they care for their own people's health. Panic is not the answer and precaution would prevent you from this bad surprises. Now you're saying how lucky you are to never being touched by any flu and that is good but still it's not enough. I am thinking to stick for a while to fish and vegetables or maybe only fruits, vegetables and dried fruits. I hope I am not like panicking, am I?
crimochina:
jeani, you do understand that cooking meat correctly kills off the viruses and bacteria.
Scandinavian:
it might also be worth knowing that increasing vitamin C intake has pretty much zero effect on avoiding things like flu. it is of course important to get enough.
not eat meat. dying of birdy flu seems like the humane way to move forward
crimochina:
scan , i said fight off not avoid. you really can't avoid airborne pathogens
Scandinavian:
ok, well. vitamin C does not help you in any way not getting or getting better from the flu, so same applies.
if anyone has recent medical proof of the contrary that would be interesting to read
BLAME USA!
Scandinavian:
why blame US and Australia for something that is so obviously Japans fault
This is one of the main reasons in America, modern farms do not allow you to enter and leave a farm wearing street clothes and shoes.
-Some farms even make you shower before AND after entering the buildings.
-This is an important way to reduce disease vectors.
My local market still have live birds, feathers flying, shit running on the floor and parts of butchered birds being thrown around. No change.
Its China it is always worth panicking a little bit.
Anyway, if a real outbreak occurs in mainland, by the time it gets to the media we'll all already be walkers.
Do not panic. It's useless. But buy a baseball bat, food and water stocks, batteries and solar panels that will come handy to wait for relief while the army is managing all those "infected".
The common flu kills over 250,000 people a year. Do you think panic is required for a few sick or dead folks from H7N9?
This is why I will not be eating any food in China that is not prepared with my own hands. I've already vowed to not consume any meat while I'm in the country, as far as veggies and fruits..I'm gonna have to pray I find some type of farmers market that's actually trust worthy..otherwise..it's rice and soy sauce every day...and I have no problem with that at all lol.
Scandinavian:
Do you have a contingency plan for if you loose both hands in a elevator-door accident and have hands from a death row prisoner transplanted. Then you would technically be eating food made with someone elses hands.
belle_watson:
Aren't you the one that is heading to ZIBO, SHANDONG which was one of the mini-epicenters during last year's chicken flu thing?
WanderingTeacher:
Scandinavian - I pray to God nothing like that happens... But if it does.. I will carefully wash my new set of hands diligently until I feel they no longer have any remnants of their previous user. Belle - while it may have been a mini epicenter for human infection however I am not worried about getting it. 1. Human to human transmission is very very rare. The only way to acquire this specific virus is dealing directly with infected birds or the environment in which they were stored. 2. In my microbiology class last year we did a case study on the this subtype of avian flu and it's potential to turn into a pandemic if human to human transmission were prevalent. We concluded that it would be just like any other flu and focus on prevention and attention to the Chain of Infection would be the most effective deterrent.
More H7N9 in China http://www.who.int/csr/don/2013_12_10/en/index.html this time Zhejiang province.
we just got a outbreak in Australia but it does not make the news , last year there was an outbreak in Bali and again did not make the news here, and you think China keeps things from it's people
Teli says: Baoding, Hebei, heavily populated, under 'chicken is bad' alert. 6 human cases in Guangdong (4 last few days), 5 in Zhejiang, 2 in HK. Teli goes too fast. I missed number of human infections w/ bird in one other Province.
In America Americans look to giant poultry corporations with a very suspicious eye in regards to various chemicals or strange feeds that may be given to chickens.
But at least there isn't the threat of a new pandemic every year. Tyson Chicken can't take over the chicken market quickly enough! An American food company operating in China is like a Godsend, which is sad!
"Chinese scientists sound warning over new bird flu virus"
Avian flu viruses pass from infected birds to humans in close proximity but typically do not transmit easily between humans
New name is 'H10N8'

Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province has reported an outbreak of the H5N6 bird flu virus in poultry, the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) announced Monday.
Over 20,000 geese at a farm in Harbin, the provincial capital, showed symptoms of avian flu and almost 18,000 died last month, according to the MOA.
The National Avian Influenza Reference Laboratory on Monday confirmed the epidemic was H5N6.
The infected area has been sealed off and sterilized with almost 69,000 poultry culled and safely disposed, the MOA said.
Bird flu, or avian influenza, is a contagious disease of animal origin caused by viruses that normally infect only birds and, less commonly, pigs. It can be fatal to humans.

BEIJING - Two people have died of the H7N9 strain of avian flu in China’s eastern province of Fujian, state media said on Saturday, quoting local health officials.
Fujian has confirmed 15 cases since the start of 2015, Xinhua news agency reported. It did not say when the two patients died. Another human infection was reported in the adjacent province of Jiangxi on Friday, Xinhua said, while both the municipality of Shanghai and neighbouring Zhejiang province have reported cases this winter. Cases of the virus accelerated in China in 2014, with statistics compiled by health authorities in Beijing showing 310 cases were diagnosed on the mainland from January until December 10, including 132 deaths. Another death was recorded on December 29.
hi2u:
Wow, 132 deaths in all of mainland China in about 12 months. In other news, more than 5000 people have died in car-related accidents in Guangdong province alone.
icnif77:
The difference is all cars have breaks, and flu with bird can fly around unlimited.
I'm heading to Fujian in a week, sooooo 'me concern' (NOT).

From pigs? Damn, I do not approach local Chinese anymore.
Okay I admit this one was easy.
