Q: Has anyone ever been inside a mahjong den?

I live next to one that's open literally 24 hours a day. Every time I pass by all I see is old men with huge pot bellies and lots and lots of smoke. Too scared to ever go in, though I do know how to play. These people gamble money? The whole thing looks just so shady...

My wife used to love them, and in Nanning at least, the patrons are by no means all men.

Since we returned to China and as we have a young daughter my wife now goes to her friends coffee shop when she plays but even that isn't that often.

8 years ago, in Nanning the usual gamble was 1RMB per card, now apparently the minimum is 2 and usually 5, but people gamble for as much as 25 per card. That can get very expensive, even at 1RMB my wife could regularly win or loose 200RMB, (in her defense she usually won).
