My wife complains I don't talk to her since I moved here. I suggested she sends the MIL back to her own house so I at least stand a chance of getting a word in.

Yeah I did, for a few days as I am so busy recently. But they should call me today... So it's all good!

I can't talk to anyone.

The internet is basically unusable for me at the moment (although for some reason ECC is one of the few websites that do work). I'm not receiving emails I know were sent and the last time I tried to skype home the connection died abruptly, I suspect I was harmonized because my mother happened to mention how she read pollution was something like 10 times the safe limit in Beijing or somewhere.

I have to say I hate this place more than ever right now.

ScotsAlan:

I find the Microsoft emails work ok. @outlook.com @live.com. But hotmail blocked. I chat to people all over the world with wechat tho. Yup, we know it is monitored, hey ho. My wife took our daughter to Scotland last summer. Stayed with my sister. Sister has a smartphone. I asked wife to set up wechat on sisters phone. She refused. Said we should use facebook. Erm...ok. I go on FB maybe once a week. I get stroppy messages from my sister about not using FB chat... I try to explain the great firewall. She says it should not affect me because I am British. Yup. Ok. All she has to do is put an app on her phone. Too many people are ignorant of the problems of living in China. Top of the list is my sister.

Yup. A few of my friends have wechat but let's face it, nobody wants to install crap on their phone that they would seldom use and could be loaded with all sorts of Chinese malware for all they know.

Depends how you access Hotmail @ Scots. I have both my hotmail accounts on my phone and never have a problem with emails.

I have a hotmail account I almost never use but it's working great. Tells me I have messages I can't read on facebook.

Using Wechat outside of china is not just about convenience...that's just the shifty brainwash behind the chinese business model...Facebook created social media..but china wants to block it from entering it's market..It copies it with wechat and tries to export Wechat to the rest of the world as the "primary market" (with all of the backdoors wide open for china)...Don't use Wechat out of china except to talk to chinese people...That's their model. If chinese people want to chat with you THEY can use FACEBOOK just like the rest of the known world...It is quite petty that they refuse to do so.

Skype works well in Henan. Yahoo for email. I can even check Gmail over Safari mail on my Window-less puter.

I was just saying that to my mate yesterday.  That it's pot luck trying to get a hold of any site but ECC is always reliable.  We mused over that.

My email is outlook/hotmail and it's blocked about 50% of the time.

I'm with Stiggsy.  Fkn hate China too.

My family and I have a wechat group....even my mum is into it. I think we communicate more in this group than we ever did before.

I have been here for 12 years and sadly it has made my relationship with my family back home in the UK go to nothing. I have not once been given a letter, parcel, or even a email to ask how I am from my brothers and sister, my mum has kept in touch though that is usually one maybe twice a month, my family have not really been close anyways and it also goes for when my grandmother and grandfather died I just got a simple email days later with a blunt message saying they are dead.

China is my home now and I like it here, I feel much happier here than I ever did back in the UK. I also get treated here by all my Chinese friends as a part of the family.
