Q: Has China ever fought and won a war with a foreign power in the last 1,000 years?

Yeah I know they had a lot of bloody internal civil and tribal wars/revolutions, but have they ever officially been a party to war and prevail?  I don't think the Korean War counts because they were only mercenaries and technically that war never ended yet.  They don't admit to their brief border clash with Vietnam.  The reason I ask, is because I think that without any actual experience fighting a modern war, they would not stand a chance against Japan or any NATO country.

Well, they did fight us (the USA) to a standstill in Korea back in the 1950's. Does that count?

They didn't even "win" Korea in any sense anyway. That war accomplished its purpose of booting the commies out of South Korea. What SHOULD have happened was the west should have gone all in and march straight to Beijing.

Anyway, they haven't won a thing. And they would be destroyed in a real war now.

They defeated the French in the Franco-Sino war  (1884 to 1885)although history books say China lost. In my opinion, the French got Vietnam and a few other places but NOT China so China won in my book and I don't  really care who says other wise.  They won against America, Australia and others in the Korean "police actiont" and again in the Vietnam "conflict".  China had a tangle with India and won and Britain backed down on it's "CLAIM" to Hong Kong but not many other places.  Finally, China did not exactly lose during a border conflict with RUSSIA in 1969...while both countries were aiding Vietnam.

Has America won any in since 1945?  Oh, sorry, how is America doing with the job of "peace keeping".

I have a hard time counting Korea and for that matter Vietnam as 'war victories'. In these cases there were complex political goals, proxies, international concerns and I have a VERY HARD TIME suggesting China 'defeated Japan' but since I don't want a massive amount of 'national pride' heaped on me I won't really go further.

But China has had some epic civil wars, uprisings etc.

Someone here intended to slight the USA but a few things worth mentioning - there are coalitions in the ME.

But one of the most stunning things I ever saw were 'body count' ratios in Afghanistan. It's absolutely stunning. As high as 35-1 in favour of western forces. Apparently Afghans/Taliban SUCK at fighting.

China could quite possibly fight Afghanistan and win!

In the great border kerfuffle of 1989, both sides claimed victory. The Chinese for proving their point, if you will; the Vietnamese for successfully not being occupied.

China could have 50 aircraft carriers 100 subs and a 3 million man army. They still would not win a war without a foreign ally experienced in warfare like Russia, the U.S., India, etc. Their military is fragmented and too compartmentalized with integration on paper only. If they had to fight Japan, it would be the world's biggest cluster-fu*k within two weeks. I'll put my money on the Japs as much as I still don't forgive them for Pearl Harbor.

A:Do you mind providing a link, or a source for this ?Honestly, I think it would be self-defeating to propagate Marx's ideas in China, at least for the powers-to-be. It would be bad for the harmony of China. That's why I'm asking you to provide some serious source, that sounds just so irrational to me, unless it's a completely warped rewriting of Marx. I would much less surprised to see Kong Zi pushed forward and Lu Xun put in the shadow. Ho... It happened already http://szdaily.sznews.com/html/2009-08/19/content_742530.htm !Why I think so ? Marx said something about those who hold the capital, and those who generate capital while not owning it. That those with the capital owns the right to make laws, the ability to enforce the laws and bend reality to their will. Those who don't own capital but make capital tends to be exploited and kept in their situation. Why on Earth one would harshly criticize the very foundation of modern China, if it's not to undermine it ? -- DrMonkey
