Q: Has customs ever nailed you when you went home from China?

I am so sick of things in Canada. My property taxes will jump 30% next year. Electricity took a big hike last year, this month it went up 30%. I think we are so over regulated, I could write a page of examples, but the final straw for me was when I came home last week. I spent 4 hours going through immigration and customs. They seized my computer and iphone 4 as they may or may not be suitable for importing. My computer is an older Think Pad, next to nothing on it. My iphone 4 can't be unlocked and has been sitting in China for 2 years, so I brought it home. I was told my computer was being sent away and customs was going to crack my Sky Drive and other accounts, which I believe they can see all my internet activity from. I can't get an answer as to whether I'll get my stuff returned. This seems just insane to me. I now hate living in Canada more than ever, what a Nazi State it has become.

That is crazy!! I've never heard of that before.

TedDBayer:

I know its crazy, I've heard of them checking for pedophiles, but thats not me. There is nothing on my computer except normal pictures. I don't use the internet on my phone. But to tell me they are going to hack into my history. WTF does that have to do with immigration? Were the Nazis any worse?

No, but I am a little worried because I haven't been paying taxes in the US..

ironman510:

If you're working aboard you won't have to pay taxes unless you make over $98,000.. But the only risk is if you return and the IRS will assume how much you made and make you pay back taxes on things you never owned. So I had my mom files back taxes for me for the 5 years I missed. Just hire a CPA to handle it for you, it won't be a problem, but of course there's that 90% chance nothing will ever happen to you because unless your name is out there as a money making business success.

And your not losing anything on your pension plan because it will go bankrupt before we can use it.

If you never owed any taxes, that's fine. Of course, like most that way, your basically poor enough and unsuccessful enough that it makes little difference anyway. Except of course that you missed out on.

I went back to Vancouver last month for 2 weeks after being in China for 2 and half yrs and it was fastest i ever gone through customs. Everything is now automated now and can scan your passport and entrance form so i didn't even have to talk to a customs officer, took less than 15 minutes from plane landing to exiting airport no questions asked

Yeah. I bring my gf with me for 2 weeks in France. Two policemen were waiting at the exit of the plane. Waiting just for her. To remind her in passable English that she should go back to China after 2 weeks, and asking to see the plane ticket to go back. Thanks guys, great impression you gave her there.

I'm not at all surprised about France, i heard and saw a public announcement that France is over crowed with too many illegal foreigners.

(CBS News) Trailing in opinion polls to his main opponent in the upcoming presidential election, France's current President Nicholas Sarkozy took a sharp turn to the right Tuesday by declaring that France has "too many foreigners," the BBC reports.

"Our system of integration is working more and more badly, because we have too many foreigners on our territory and we can no longer manage to find them accommodation, a job, a school," Nicolas Sarkozy said on Tuesday, according to Al Jazeera.

DrMonkey:

Sarkozy's dad was a Hungarian migrant who moved to France. 70% of the French citizen have at least one grand-parent born outside of France. I'm one of those people with migrant ancestors : Polish farmers. Read French journal from 1850 : same discourses, but about migrants from poor provinces moving to cities.

This kind of discourse are hypocritical, blaming lots of problems on "others". Most migrants are a hard-working bunch, taking jobs other wouldn't touch with a bargepol. They pay tax. Their net contribution in taxes to the state is larger than what they get from the state. Sarkozy built his career on this kind of demagogic crap that does not stand a look at the fact. There are a troublesome bunch (kids of migrants parked on shitty suburbs and who faced a lot of ugly racisms since decades), they are a minority conveniently blamed of all that is wrong.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
