Q: Have you been to Starbucks lately? New food/drink scandal?

I only just heard about this from the wife. Better safe than sorry! And to think I was going to take her there yesterday to grab a snack...

I have no news right now, only that it's bad. Look around, you might find it, and it may pop up soon.

I prefer City Action Coffee Shop over Starbucks.

Also, Pizza Hut (at least here) currently has an afternoon tea offer. For 28CNY you get a piece of decent brownie (it's good cake for China) with a scoop of icedcream, and .... endless refills of the coffee. Well, at least from 14-17.

I rarely go to Starbucks, but I can tell you this:
All these things you find on local media about western food chains is nothing but organized propaganda to destroy their image. Why? Because local brands could not build good reputation to compete with their western counterparts.
I will give you a simple example, last year CCTV reported on the instant chicken scandal that involved KFC. I believed it and started to avoid KFC until a Chinese friend of mine told me that the so called instant chicken has been around for years and KFC is not the only place that uses it. He told me CCTV reported on the issue in revenge for KFC's decision to end its advertisements on CCTV. So it was about blackmailing KFC. Nobody really cares about food safety here.

Hulk:

Interesting.

All of the recent scandals I've heard of involve Pepsi, Coke, KFC, and Starbucks.

My wife said it's the "black-hearted Chinese businessmen" who put all these bad additives into the food and drinks, not my countrymen.

I most agree with wild cat except for the KFC chicken hormone scandal. I remember watching a 20/20, Dateline, or 60 minutes program about 10 years ago where young 7 year old girls were sprouting huge boobs in Louisana in a town where the only fast food place was a KFC.  When they did a visit to the chicken farm and got samples of the growth hormones given to the chickens, they found the same chemical in the little girls.  Calm down Ted, the girls are all grown up by now - it was 10 years ago!

I asked my wife about this, (rumours ref Starbucks), as she virtually lives on Weibo, and she hasn't heard anything. She has heard lots about KFC / McDonalds and unsafe levels of growth hormones in the chicken. Of course rumours do not necessarily relate to truth but she has absolutely ruled out taking our daughter to either, (not that we would anyway).

My wife showed me an article in Chinese news, I think from QQ.com, and it said to avoid Starbucks, Minute Maid, etc.
