Q: Have you ever been sickened by the behavior of other expats?

Last night after dinner with the gf, came out of the restaurant and crossed paths with a group of drunk foreigners. Americans, by the looks of it. All holding Qingdaos in hand, one of which stopped to piss on a tree. Lots of people around. I didn't want to get into a fight so I kept my mouth shut, but it was tough.

Reminded me other stories I've heard, some from my past university students, about English professors dating various of their students, making advances on some of my friends, etc.

Guess it's inevitable, given how privileged we can be...still makes me sick. I don't remember seeing this kind of behavior back home, at least not to this degree.

Then we're going to criticize Chinese for generalizing us, or getting the wrong picture, but when you see some of the stuff expats do here, I guess it's not that surprising...

Yes, sometimes I'm embarrassed to be associated to expats when they behave like druken hooligans and show no respect for Chinese people. Or when the act like they're superior and Chinese are just lowly peasants in their eyes. People like that shouldn't be here. They really anger me.

The behaivor of some Ex-Pats in China leavs a lot to be desired, Ameicans, from UK or Australia, or from wherever.  They behave worse than drunken sailors on leave.

At least on the city where I live, there are two kinds, those that raise cane each single day, drink beer until dead drunk, and chase any skirt nearby, and those happily engaged or married who are indeed, very nice to be with.  I have chosen to join the second group, I do not mind a beer or two, but to be drunk every day is not my thing.

A common pastime here while drinking is to sit on a table near the side walk.  As nice looking gals walk by, a bet is made (20 Rmb per person sitting on table) as to the color of her panties.  She is called over the table, and asked to lift her skirt.  If she does, whoever wins will give her all the money in the bet.  Sometimes it does get revolting, I wonder when the Police will intervene with those fellows.

It is unfortunately, but it does happen, and I honetly do not feel I can do anything to prevent it or to stop it.

derek:

I have never heard of this and I agree with you, it's wrong. That "brand" of expat would piss me off too. Foolish

It can indeed be quite embarassing the way many foriengers will openly treat Chinese people with contempt or like dirt. When I do vent, I do so only with other expats or on forums like this but with my Chinese friends I am much more discreet. Goes to what someone on this site said once , we are guests in China and ought to behave as such.

re: happy what further pisses me off about those kinds of cowards they would never try that in their home countrie becoz they would get their bells rung by the girl or a brother or bf

HappyExPat:

Yes Crimo, agree with you, if they tried that at home, they would not last long.   Unfortunately, many of those ExPats feel all girls they see on the street are "easy" ones, no respect at all.  Maybe that is the reason some are  here, ran away from home before jail time.

re: icerock. i dont know if this is what you are referring to, but in our culture we are taught to be honest and dishonesty is a bad thing not a sign of intelligence. so when we talk to people we look them in the eye so they can see that we are being honest that is why we are taught that someone who refuses to look you in the eye might be dishonest.
and becoz we are taught to see every person as a human being (equality and human rights) we will not talk to another person as if they are our master i have spoken to presidents of companies , mayors and governors. i have spoken to gangsters , drug dealers and people involved with organized crime. i have spoken to homeless people drug addicts  i never look at the floor when i talk to anyone , i never look down my nose at anyone either. i look them squarely in the eyes. this sends 4 messages. i respect you. i expect you to respect me. i am being straight with you. i expect you to be straight with me. looking someone in the eye comes down to 2 important principles: honesty and respect (seeing each other as equals)

icerock:

for you information, this nickname come from the world war II, at frist this nicknmae have no bad means only for chinese description foreigner features, especially point to amercian men. but after defeated japan invader, chinese people don't like amercian goverment signed unfair agreements with china nationalist party and support them fight to the china communist party, from that time, this nickname use to satirize those arrogance amercian politicians and their policies.

There's the people who treat China like a holiday and then there's people who treat China with a homely respect.

You never see the TV show Boozed up Brits abroad?

Blame the schools. They want young and extroverted.

You get a bunch of young, extroverted guys together, far from home, and they're gonna do that kind of stuff. That's true in any culture.

I can't stand when the schools complain, "I wanted 22 year old extroverted cool guy and chose that over the experienced older candidate, but he's lazy, hurts the school's reputation, is always late and hungover! HOW COULD THIS BE!??!?!?"

I suppose that, in the city I live in, I'm a little insulated, in that I don't run into other foreigners often, so I very rarely see any behavior, bad or otherwise.

Some of the posters hit on a few main points, however, such as "young, extroverted groups of men far away from home," which is never a recipie for moderation and chastity. Add booze to the mix...

But why does it bother you so much? Is it because you will be catagorized as the same? Do you feel they should know better? In other words, because it will cast a bad reflection on who others think you are? It's human nature to generalize about those who are different from us (whoever "us" happens to be). People remember the bad over the good. We can't help that.

If someone thinks I'm "bad" because of what someone else has done, that is, in effect, their shortcoming. I'm not going to live my life trying to counter all the bad things other Americans have done over the years. Personally, I couldn't tell an American from a European from an Australian from many a South American, unless I spoke with them, but that's another point entirely.

This is not condoning the nature that you witnessed, but I just don't see the point. Bad behaviror is reprehensible whether it comes from someone from the west, or anywhere else in the world.

I have witnessed this on many occasions in Shanghai, it's so unattractive. The American guys here (the younger guys) are incredibly obnoxious! It's not just to Chinese girls either. People go out, people get drunk, but most are still able to behave in a civil manor...for some reason the American kids seem to struggle with this.

There are assholes everywhere.  The specific personalities it takes to leave everything and move to the other side of the world, can provide a higher population of said assholes.  Mix in the "rock star" treatment, the cheapness of booze and the concept of "it's not my country and any actions here won't be known once I do leave", and you easily have the group of drunks that force their way into the kitchen of McD's to make their own food.

Now walking around drinking a beer or even using a tree, I don't have a problem with.  Hell, I've been guilty of myself, just don't go about making a drunken scene and disrespecting other people.

Wow, I thought I was the only one with this problem!

I was excited to move to China because I thought I'd meet lots of wordly, open-minded and interesting people in the expat community (naiive, I know)... there are some... but I've been horrified by the behaviour of so many expats out here.

I don't think you can pin it on any particular nationality. I've seen dreadful arrogance from men and women, of different nationalities, directed especially at Chinese wait staff. I think people believe they can say whatever they want because these waiters and waitresses are paid to take it, but they'd never say it to a waiter back home. I went for dinner with some friends and was sooo embarrassed when at the end of the meal the waiter asked in his best English if we'd enjoyed it and someone loudly said, 'no, it tasted like SH*T'. There are ways to complain and ways to insult. Personally I think if you want to do either, you should have the courtesy to learn to do it in Chinese.

Likewise, in the treatment of Chinese girls, men behave in a way that would probably get them slapped in their home countries. I don't see how moving abroad can cause your principles to evaporate... and this also applies to the sex industry - while most men would be embarrassed to admit they have to pay for it back home, here it's like a perverse badge of honour. Even amongst some of the seemingly 'happily engaged and married' men happyexpat mentions.

kchur:

As for the waiter thing, when in Rome. As for the racist arrogant thing, when in Rome. The sex thing is pretty spot on but to some extent when in Rome.... the foreigners are just very slightly less discrete.

No. I was slightly embarassed by the ingratitude and poor people skills of a former collegue. But sickened no.

Even at the expat hangouts in my city, people seem pretty mellow. Possibly the tossers stick to the biggest cities?
