Q: Have you ever gone to a doctor in China and they blame a problem on you being "foreigner"

Had some trouble hearing recently so I went to a doctor.  The first doctor looked at me briefly and actually said that it's just because I'm a foreigner. That was his "professional" diganoise.

Obviously having some doubt about that (not even sure what that means) I went to another doctor and it just turns out I had some ear wax buildup in my ear and it just needed to be cleaned out. Nothing too uncommon or  weird at all.

So what about you guys. Is there anything you went to a doctor or a pharmacy for and they seem to just be lazy (or maybe not that good) and they just though "I don't know what it is, you're a foreigner"  excuse ?

This "Chinese body is different from others" bull.... comes up once in a while. My only experience with "being incompatible" with the Chinese health system was at a health check where the stick they use to measure height was only 1,8 meters. The nurse did not have any good suggestions as to how to actually measure me, so she asked "Are you sure your are more than 1,8 meters tall"

In everyday talk I have heard this on a number of occasions. E.g. someone justified the one month of lying in bed after childbirth with the fact that Chinese women are different than western women. This as "general knowledge" is most likely not doing anything good in terms of fighting racism

At least you will not be affected by H7N9 as it is only Chinese people who get that.

Btw. There is an OTC ear rinse thing you can get that you drip in the ear, wait a bit and then rinse. It will dissolve the earwax. Don't have the name handy, I do have a bottle from the vet, most likely would work for humans too as dog ear wax is the same as man earwax. Wonder how Chinese ear was is?

There is only one race, the human race

GuilinRaf:

People of European ancestry tend to have sticky earwax. Asians tend to have a more crumbly, powdery type.

ambivalentmace:

hydrogen peroxide clears the ear wax, its about 80 percent of the formula on ear wax medicine bottle, it will bubble and break it up and rinse with with a rubber plunger with warm water. the bottles are small green or red bottles.

guo yang hua qing rong ye, 100 milliliters for 1.5 rmb.

not a doctor, but I had an unlicensed "plumber" diagnose the problem with our toilet was that I was a foreigner. Apparently he tried to claim Chinese toilets can't handle American crap. Just for the record I'm 188cm, weigh 88kg and eat regular food.

Hulk:

Most of the time it's because you're a foreigner. Seriously. Foreigners expect their toilets to be able to handle more than 1-2 wipes worth of paper. Chinese flush after every wipe.

I have a horror story about a hotel manager. I clogged up the toilet every single day for a week. He came in to fix the toilet every day, and often had to use his hands.   After a week of this happening daily, he never came back. I think there was a suicide letter involved. "This is such a shatty job. Bye forever."
