Q: Have you heard about Almighty God Christian Group in Qinghai Province?

i just read the following news and wondering about this group:

Chinese police have arrested more than 500 members of a doomsday cult for spreading rumours about the imminent end of the world, state media say.

At least 400 followers of the Almighty God Christian group were detained in western Qinghai province in recent days. Dozens more were held elsewhere.

Why would a Christian group be followers of a pagan Mayan calendar?

Scandinavian:

I'll have a stab at answering this for you.

The roman calendar which is the basis of the western worlds date system was, as the name indicates invented by the romans. As Jesus was killed by romans it would seem odd for the modern Christian to use anything roman. Public toilets is another roman invetion !!!

bill8899:

Yes, why? Christian groups are so rational and steeped in scientific methods. It boggles the mind to combine the rationality of Christians with a baseless claim.

According to reports circulating on the Internet, they are a schismatic Protestant sect of some kind that believes that its Chinese leader is the local reincarnation of Jesus Christ.  Western news reports say that they have been involved in kidnappings, forced conversions, ransom, extortion and an entire bevy of less-than-Christian-like going-ons.  The New  York Times carried a by-line about them two-or-three weeks ago.  Some of their more extreme believers were even involved in a beheading or two.  Again, this is from the Western press, not the Chinese state media.
