Q: Have you heard this one here ?
Have you ever heard something as idiotic or stupid as what a friend told me? Are Chinese really this gullible? A couple of days ago, a friend was telling my GF and me that she could not go with us because she had to run to her apartment and allow the hot water line to run for 15 or 20 minutes. I was puzzle by this, and asked why? She said since it is 39 degrees outside, the solar heater on the roof will heat up the water too much, and she had to allow hot water out so colder water will come in and will not catch fire or explode. She added she was getting tired of running home two or three times per day just to do this, and has done it for the last three years. I tried very hard to explain to her that whomever told her to do that, had no idea of the system and how it works. It does have a relief vent with a pressure valve that will vent water and vapors out if pressure raises too much due to heat. It will never explode, and could not catch fire because one water does not burn, and two neither does aluminum and cooper. But I wasted my time, she will not listen to a foreigner over what a wise, intelligent and savy Chinese had told her. What really got to me is that my GF believed it too, and wanted to start doing it when we arrived back to the apartment. I put my foot down, and finally convinced her when I told her we have been here for over two years, and it has not exploded or caught fire, why vent? DUMB !!!!!!! Have you heard this one before? Maybe I will get it post on WECHAT, and see people rushing back to their apartments to vent the solar heater. He, He !

I am pretty sure solar water heaters don't have a safety valve. I am sure they are vented at atmosphere, so no danger of any over pressure.
How to argue against this exploding solar heating thing?
I would use science, specific heat capacity of water, surface area of water heater exposed to the sun, energy hitting the heater, emistivity of the heater surface ( a black surface is best for heating through the day, but a silver surface is better for retaining the heat at night), blah blah blah. Boring stuff.
I would take the money angle. Why invest in a solar heater if you are going to pour all your hot water away? You get free hot water and pour it away?
Or do the example thing. Why does your kettle or soup pan not explode when you boil water?
But seriously happyexpat. One of the funniest stories I have heard in a long time

I hear all kinds of stupid stuff. When I prove them wrong, they act like nothing happened. It is like their brains simply can not accept the fact a foreigner was right over them.
This problem probably came from bursting pipes or something in the old days. A lot of Chinese still open their windows in the morning (even during freezing Winter) to "clean the air". This is because they are afraid of carbon poisoning that happened a lot in the past as well because they homes will poorly constructed. Now they have alarms for this but they STILL open the windows...
Once a Chinese person believes something another Chinese person told them, it is VERY difficult to dispel that belief. Almost impossible if you are a foreigner. They just lack critical independent thought... they education is built around note memorization, listening to their teacher and questioning nothing.
Oh china you've done it again. I will never cease to be amazed with some of the crap chinese people believe, and not just that but try to convince me of too, apparently cold water will kill us all. I've been drinking it for 23 years and I'm still here..good grief

They do! Add growth hormone to livestock. The problem in China is there's no Gov. control on additives.
Look at the banananas. All bananas have cracked peel off. Looks like fruit is too big for the shell. They probably pick green ones, and then expose them to the indoor growth lights during the transport. But, who really knows, what's the cause.

It could be true scots, products that are sold in the west and in China have very different ingredients. The Chinese can add almost anything they want to it. A Russian friend of mine was telling me about the land Russia leased to China (good luck getting it back when the lease runs out). The Chinese farmers there spray all sorts of crazy unnecessary chemicals on the crops completely poisoning the lands. Like mentioned above once one Chinese person does or says something then it becomes a behaviour that is almost immpossible to stop. Don't add harmful hormones to food? But then the food will be smaller. Silly foreigner, you think too much.

Yeah, it's inconclusive, and much speculation, but still, the idea that fast food (either through hormones or the fat) causes early puberty isn't completely unfounded.

Haven't you been listening Scots??? Because some Chinese person said "use this cream - it's the only thing that will really increase breast size"... and so, everyone else follows!
And, no, the logic filter of McNuggets will also increase breast size doesn't work - because that only applies to kids - not to adults!

There's hormones (lots of different ones), and there's estrogens, which is *one group* of hormones. Estrogen, yes, it promotes some feminine traits like boobs, even in men. You also have a different hormone : growth hormone, which promote growth. It's used for animal so they get bigger faster, although it's forbidden in various countries, because it end-up in the meat and it's not likely to do much good. Knowing whar rule-of-law is in China, in *countryside* China, we all know what it means in terms of growth hormone in the food.

She won't get bigger boobs, but I would be picky about meat in general (hint: I was vegetarian in China)
american women do have bigger mammary glands and periods much earlier when compared to 50 years ago, but the variables involved, the food conglomerates lawyers, and the distorted agenda will probaby never bring out the real facts for another generation, and it might not be as bad as speculation says, or it could be a mountain made out of a mole hill, history will tell the tale long after our deaths.

Diet probably. But in many countries there is an issue with estrogen from the pill making it into the water system. Especially in places such as the South of England, where drinking water is abstracted from rivers downstream of sewage plants. It also turns fish gay aparently.

Most Chinese are science illiterate. They only learn things that allow them to make money.
