Q: Heading to Guangzhou this weekend: What must I eat?

I've been a couple of times, but I think I'm not eating the best stuff when I'm there. I've heard great things about Guangzhou. So anyone in the know in terms of what I should eat?

Do you like to eat Dim Sum? Thats probably the most famous. And depending on where you go. Its super good. More of a breakfast lunch thing than Dinner.

I love the food in Guangzhou mainly because its not spicy and its kind of what the chinese food back home is based on.  Your BBQ Pork, and duck with plum sauce, chow mein,  spring rolls. Beef and brocolli. Its everywhere.   If your by yourself and dont know where to go I would suggest  a Hong Kong style snack shop.  Casual  booth style restaurants where you can find everything youve eaten back home pretty much.

If your really stuck trying to find, Google a place called " Uncle"  Its a famous franchise of HK restaurants in Guangzhou and other cities.  Your safest bet if your alone.

Enjoy!

I second Dim Sum. There is two places in the world where you get great Dim Sum, Hong Kong and Guangzhou.

everything.

according to my students, if it is alive, they will eat it, and this from a student from Guangzhou.

Sidebar:

one class included a conversation topic "what would happen if......."

the question was"what would happen if an alien landed?"

a quick student replied "in Guangzhou they would eat it"

it took a while for the laughter to stop.

mike695ca:

I find that really strange. Its true that in Guangzhou they eat everything, and the cantonese people like to laugh at themselves about it. But in reality compared to other places, they eat far more normal stuff than in other cities.  No dog, no wierd shit, mostly just meat.  Maybe another reason i prefer cantonese food.

I have heard of lots of underground places where the eat horrible stuff like mice babies, and monkey brains, so there is probably some truth to it, but in my many years here i havent come across anything, so untill then, its just rumours.

my Guangzhou student told me he had eaten rat and mouse.

I didn't believe it until it was confirmed by another Guangzhou student in another class.

i still don't want to believe it : there is not much eating on a mouse

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
