Q: Help me out... What are some good Chinese media?

Well, I have done it.

I have arrived back in China and I am trying to remedy one of my greatest regrets which was not learning Chinese well enough with the time I had. I use things like mobile applications, Chinese books and the online portal "Chinesepod".

This has worked out decently enough but I find the best way is proper immersion which means watching Chinese movies, reading Chinese books and getting out there and talking with people.

The only problem is I don't have a clue what some good Chinese movies or books are... I need help.

I don't mean the international ones but domestic ones that would help propel my Chinese to a higher level. I really want to pass the HSK 6 by next springs/summer. So please let me know some top-notch Chinese movies, books or just listening materials and if you can... where to find them. They don't have to be extremely dialogue heavy or philosophical... just need a good story to practice listening.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Have you tried Pimsleur? I'm sure the upper levels would be quite a challenge for you, and the conversations are fairly relevant to daily life. Granted, you'd miss out on learning the characters, but some people have uploaded transcripts in both pinyin and hanzi (but Pimsleur have not been happy about this... idiots!)

Obviously not quite the same as movies, books and TV, but I'd suggest it's pretty helpful!

Hey there, I would advise you to download the official program and app of the CCTV http://app.cctv.com/appkhdxz/pc/index.shtml

My goal for now is HSK 5 and I have this feeling that after watching the news for the last 3 months my understanding has improved significantly. They also have a number of TV series in their database, but I personally can't make myself to watch them as the way they portray the history is always the same, namely naive and extremely simplified.

I would be grateful If you could share some HSK 5 tips with me.

Cheers

Robk:

Thanks, I will go ahead and check this out.

Do they have to be Chinese movies and books?

I've never really looked into it, but aren't there Chinese websites with Western movies dubbed into Chinese? Also DVDs.

Same with Western books, I've seen them for sale with both English and Chinese text.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
