Q: HELP! My phone got stolen and the thief is trying to scam me

I had my phone stolen over a month ago and the Chinese guy who stole it is still trying to hack and scam me on my work number. He keeps sending several messages pretending to be from my the company that makes my stolen phone and called me several times with the number of their customer service (probably using some software to spoof the number) to say that they found my phone and that he needed my email and passwords to confirm. Obviously, I didn't tell him and called the company instead, and they said they would never ask for such sensitive info. He likely got access to all the info on that was on my phone (photos, emails, IDs) before I changed the passwords, so he wants to dig more into my stuff.

I haven't been to the police, because we all know how efficient they are here and my phone's company can't do much about the harassment since this is outside of their responsibility.

I would really appreciate your suggestions. Ever since I moved to China, life has started getting more anxious, especially  with all those people lying or trying to scam or steal from you everyday and everywhere. And now this. I'd like those harassing messages and calls to stop and hopefully have that guy arrested, but I don't really know what to do now.

Write him back and say you'll pay him 500RMB to get the phone back if he will meet. If he agrees you can chose to pay him or not.

You can also break his knees so he learns the lesson for next time.

You should have your phone's internal i.d then you could lock the phone remotely.

Otherwise, live and learn (for next time).

I would still go to the police. I don't know what can be done, but they might, even though they might do it slowly. They might do enough to scare the thieves into giving up trying to scam you. Just knowing the police are informed might be enough. It's worth a shot.

Nice username, seems familiar.. Hope you get your phone but Im sure the phones info has been copied or cloned. The worst has already happend. all you can do now is change all passwords and protect and inform others that could be harmed by him.

A simple solution... Don't be fluent in Chinese.

They can't scam you if you have no idea what they are saying.

Lord_hanson:

That is terrible advice. If a foreign national was being blackmailed in the UK would you tell them that they shouldn't have learnt English?

Of course. The best defense against blackmail is not knowing about it. How the feck can you be scammed by someone if you can't understand what they are saying?

Waste his time by pretending you believe he's legit and then send him BS info.

i witnessed this with a co worker. Chinese girl got her iPhone stolen, then got harassing calls, threats and offers to buy her password.
Guys like this are particularly nasty, hounding a robbery victim. They are often not the thief, but professional fences whose success depends on their ability to retrieve passwords. This is going to last a while until he gives up and sells it on for cheap to a pro hacker / software re-installer.
A smart person would try to trick the fence into selling it back to you for a higher price, then catching him in the hand-over. But be on your guard - they're not all idiots.

Dougconnell:

A really smart person would have installed find my Iphone and wiped the data remotely the minute it was stolen.

its a loss, so have some fun with it, have a friend send a message that you got a part in a movie paying 2000 rmb a day, and that your agent lu wang needs to call and make the arrangements for payment and hotel and the we the agent will send money directily to your agents bank account, ( you see were this going now i hope). give him a taste of his own medicine, the chance to get some money meant for foreigner will be too hard to pass up and now you have his bank account for the police. good luck.

another favorite, you won the door prize at ccb to receive a gold bar of 100 grams, please ask for mr lu at our xyz branch on saturday sep #, to avoid the loss of your prize. thanks again for opening your vip account of 2 million rmb.

icnif77:

Nowhere in the world you'll get 100g Gold bar reward. That quantity should be much lower to work.

Why wouldn't you want to report it police? If there are too many thefts from one area, they will have to do something. you reporting it might just save somebody else with all this trouble.

So you come to this board because a bunch of idiots with no authority or resources can solve this problem?

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
