Q: Hong Kong visit advice

Hi everyone,

So I finally decided to visit Hong Kong next month for a few days and am looking for advice on where to stay. I have read so many reviews on hotels/hostels etc and a majority of people have suggested not to stay at the Chungking mansions building, so any advice for a solo female traveller who needs a clean private room either hotel or hostel is fine but a hotel would be my first preference.

Also is there easy access from the airport to the city centre by taxi or shuttle bus as I am the stupid one who always seems to get conned as soon as I arrive at any destination and end up taking a rip off taxi and later realise I was conned, so I would rather have a little info on me.

Any suggestions would be greatly welcomed thank you.

Regarding accommodation, try searching on hostelworld.com.

you should be able to find somewhere reasonable (and safe) within your budget.

i cross referenced with Trip Advisor before booking. I stayed in a hotel on Nathan Road which was safe, but only adequate, but what p****** me off at the time, among other things, was the Internet was not free.

transport to and from the airport:

the airport website hongkongairport.com gives a few options on public transport and prices you would expect to pay to go to particular destinations.

enjoy your stay

Cheapest stay in HK is Chungking Mansions but it's... well a not so recommendable place. Try YesInn a bit more expensive but safe and clean, in Causeway Bay aka. shopping and food heaven district.

There is the MTR link between the airport and the city, to Kowloon and Hong Kong station.

I would advise against Chungking Mansions on your own. I had an interesting time there which I can look back on and laugh. Not sure I'd risk it again.

My friend stayed at the YMCA which is about the cheapest proper hotel you will find in Hong Kong. I think it's more of a hostel than a hotel, but he said it was good so I would say look into that. Taxi to the airport can be a bit expensive because it's on a different island to "downtown". There is a subway that runs to the airport as far as I can remember though.

Try agoda.com, otherwise just walk up Nathan street and Kowloon area, there are plenty of places to stay.  Public transport in HK is very well organised and easy to use, to get from the airport, just use the MTR to get into the city.

I can vouch against Chungking Mansions. It's the home base of Hong Kong's underworld. But it has some good Indian and Middle Eastern food. However the cleanliness is a different issue.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions, I am glad I posted on this forum as I knew I would get good advice and I will check out hostelworld and Agoda for accommodation. Also Sorrel thanks for the great signpost regarding Hong Kong airport, I'll be doing my research tonight Smile
