Q: Hot beer! Poor knowledge of how best to tolerate a Chinese beer. What?

The fridges in shops in China most definitely have to be the equal of  any other country's fridges in the world.
State of the art fridges are even to be found in the most out of the way places.  Must cost a packet.

Alas, the fkrs won't turn them on.

They install these magnificent fridges for no reason other than to gain face.

How spastic are these people?  Install a fridge...at great cost...but I won't turn it on...

So, given the tastelessness of Chinese beer, why don't the masses appreciate the necessity of drinking it cold?

Shit, do other countries not drink cold beer?

Eisentine said it was a case of mathematical physics:

Y = cooler for spazoid rugrats ice-cream must be kept @ 0˚

1 = Unit of Electricity required

-1 = Loss of funny gold air-freshener to put on dash of my 'luxury' car (VW)

z = cooler for pijou must be kept @ ambient temperature -1˚ for Face

therefore it follows that X-Z + Y/1x-1 = No need to chill pijou because no one else in Universe (my village) knows what chilled pijou is or gives a fk anyway and even if they did they would never say anything about it cuz they are nonggong who would never stand up for themselves anyway.

They are turning all the fridges off here, once the temperature outside drops bellow 25 Dec, except Family Mart where are fridges on all year long. So go there for beers. Or buy a 20 pieces to home and have cooled one everyday just when you step in Smile

I agree I won't shop at a place if I see the cooler is off. Means they don't respect us as customers.

The chain places will keep them on though, at least most of them.

expatlife26:

I noticed too before I lived in CBD areas that they do the same thing with escalators.

All these stupid stores will have escalators that aren't running. Now THOSE are expensive. What was the point of installing that if you aren't going to use it?

Are they saving on electricity or did it break once and they just never bothered to fix it.

The escalator probably gobbled up somebody, now they are scared they will lose face if it happens again.

I don't think they buy their fridges in the first place. I think they probably get a free one as advertisement tool when they make their first yearly order of Cola or whatever the way it happens here. I know soft drink companies like to do that. Same with sunshades, even tables... So indeed greedy nongs will take the free shelf, just ignore the power consuming function.

Same goes with escalators in malls. They don't have any intention to use them but heh that was part of the proposed design... or even simpler: because whoever has the power to greenlight a project has a cousin that has a friend in the escalator industry so here goes your local regulation. You could think of a few other situations but basically I'm quite confident that's how it looks most of the time.

I will raise you a typical China highway where they install lights but do not turn them on despite banking hoards of cash from people paying to use the road.

Isn't it more the case that Chinese people simply will not accept that some drinks are designed to be consumed chilled or iced and refuse to run refrigerators 24/7 just to cater for foreign nationals?

expatlife26:

No that's wrong and let me tell you why.

The coolers aren't there for the miniscule # of foreigners who shop there and they are run during the summer. So obviously during the hot season they will grudgingly provide cold drinks by running the coolers.

It's just that as soon as they feel they can get away with not running it they turn it off. Because they don't want to pay to operate them.

Often, when I have asked for chilled beer at restaurants, I have been met with the reply "but this is winter" along with the strange looks of confusion. It is almost as though they cannot comprehend even the possibility that someone would want a cold drink in winter. Most Chinese that I have met will not even consider drinking a cold beer on the hottest of summer days.

I've become able to tolerate warm beer if it's decent  beer but shitty Chinese beer warm is basically undrinkable - if it's ice cold I can put up with it. But I guess if you're used to doing something your whole life it becomes the norm so who are we to judge warm beer drinkers? Just personal preference as weird as it may seem. But it's beyond annoying when restaurants stop serving cold beer around this time of year. But if they're catering to the local market I can't really blame them.

along with no aircon in shopping malls and having to wear a coat in a restaurant in winter, tin pot stores and supermarkets who are turning off fridges on 31st september at 23:59 is also something that makes me quite annoyed.

(not nearly as annoying as fast food outlets (and supermarkets) starting to cash up and clean and stop cooking food about  30 minutes or so before the actual shut up shop time)

We dropped 15 degrees in 24 hours here in GZ today.

The fridges were turned off last week in anticipation of the temp drop.

Now its 15 degree here we will have warm beer for 3 months.
