If you need to go yourself, just drive. Look at a map and see if there is anything touristy on the way and make an event of it.

Remember there is some mandatory paperwork in transferring the vehicle registration, unless you want to drive back to Kunming each year to get the insurance stickers and such.

Best option is to sell the car and buy another in Beijing. Bringing it from Kunming just isn't worth the headaches and effort. Dealing with Beijing bureaucrats will drive you nuts.

Scandinavian:

actually, does Beijing restrict number of new registrations ? if so then perhaps keeping Kunming plates would work better

Calculate the distance you will drive in KM's and it will equate to about 1 rmb per kilometer. It will actually be a bit less but its better to plan for it. Plus about another 1500 for gas as a high estimate ( also depends on your car ).

How old is your car? Does it need to be inspected every 2 years??  You will not be able to do this in  Beijing. You will need to take the car back.  Insurance can be done without the car though, if you have someone who can help you handle it in Kunming.

Also, if you decide later, i beleive you will still need to take the car back to kunming and  un-register it, then get temp insurance, take it back to beijing and register it there.

If your not sure of how often you plan to go back, perhaps registering it in beijing the first time is best. Start looking into whether you can get beijing plates or not. Or even in a city close by.

I want to use the car in Beijing for about 5 months and take it back to Kunming. I am just puzzled with the paper work troubles which is worth considering before embarking on this adventure. The car was purchased newly in 2011

I would have loved to change the car papers to Beijing but I dont have the Beijing permission to buy or use a car in Beijing. The car's mileage is about 40,000kmh.

Thanks guys for the useful ideas. More would be appreciated

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
