Q: How are Chinese professors different?

I am starting school in September and the courses will be taught in English, by Chinese professors. I am just curious how differently they teach concepts and what should I be cautious about. I already kind of know how different the campus and the student body will be, but have no clue on professors....

Many thanks in advance!

From the experience with the Chinese teachers I had, they usually expect you to prepare the lessons in advance, so when they start a new lesson on the book you are expected to have already covered the new vocabulary, the texts and the exercises. Also, their teaching methods rely mainly on memorization of vocabulary, sentences and sometimes texts.

But they will always try to help you the best they can.

You very we'll may have teachers who can speak some english but know nothing about the subjects they are teaching, ie, an teacher from the english department teaching history  that passes time in class by asking the class if they went out and partied recently. Be careful of administration repeatedly changing rules on you if it is a new program ( english language programs often are) also if you have to do a thesis then make sure the school actually provides you with proper research resources (chuckle).

I went  to a top chinese university and that was my experience across the board.

Chinese professors??? Hmmm. Wouldn't a 'real' professor be tenured in a university rather than teaching english to little emperors?

Do you mean unqualified teachers with a business card that says "Professor", holier than thou attitude and hardly any chops? Yep, that's them.

Sort of like the foreigner with a Foreign Expert Certificate that gets business printed with "Professor of English" or other such rubbish.

Well from my experience there are two types of Chinese professors teaching foreigners in unis:

1. Those who actually care, I had several of them, really knowledagble people decent classes, and they cared about the subject matter, very similar to what I experienced in the West. Although the requirements for papers and grading where severely lacking.

2. The face chasers, these professors don't give a shit about anything, they just want to gain face by teaching foreigners. I had exams about stuff we didn't cover in class, canceled classes and more. These guys were also knowledagble but they just didn't give a shit about us.

Thanks a lot, that really helped. I will keep this in mind when September comes.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
