Q: How do you deal with "language wars"?

You know what I'm talking about: you want to speak Chinese and the other person wants to practice their English. I used to get so worked up about these things ("no... we're in China, dammit") but I'm starting to wonder if it's even worth the hassle. Anyone know of any graceful way to force the other person to speak Chinese without insulting them?

This is China, land of the eternal compromise.  Spend half the time speaking Chinese and spend the other half the time speaking English.

Your friends obviously have good English.

You need to spend more time with people who are not confident in English or just don't know any at all.

Slap them on their right cheek. If they refuse them proceed to slap the left cheek until they agree with you. That's the not so civil way of doing things and you could get in trouble. The other option would be to practice chinese one day and english every other day.

Put yourself into a Chinese society where nobody speaks English, then you get all the chance to practice Chinese with them.

Become Chinese, throw off any English knowledge, just pretend you are Chinese, unless you look in a mirror it's easy as you rarely see foreigners.
