Q: How do you find driving in China?

How do you find driving in China? I've seen Chinese driving at home and they are crazy. You can usually tell if you see someone driving crazy, like not slowing down and passing a bunch of stopped cars by driving on the grass shoulder. I had a Chinese woman turn right on me from the middle lane when I was driving my bike once, I barely managed to not hit her as I turned in, but she ended up with a nice dent in her Mercedes as a reminder.

I see guys blow through a red light here, with buses, trucks, cars and  scooters every where and make it clean. I'm amazed he made it. I've seen many accidents lately. But the driving is terrible and nobody really thinks about safety. Scooters drive against traffic with no lights. They drive like kumo kozis to me.

The other night as I was turning in my driveway. I got T-boned by a scooter. I don't know where he came from, except that he was driving the wrong direction at night with no light and he must have been at warp speed cause never saw him coming. I was so close to the wall that I never fell over, just against the wall. My scooter looked to be in one piece and I signaled for him to go as he got up, because I was helping the girl I was with, if I got up first I would have stomped him.

I've had bikes for along time. I've seen a lot of guys get hurt or killed. I know that you have to stay focused and don't always act on instinct, like grab the brake. You have to be able to think and react fast. You have to be able to drive out of a crash. Thats harder to do than you think, if you are not focused all the time. If you ever hit 250 or faster on a bike or car maybe you know what I mean. The average joe just can't focus like this and most people don't. They just drive however and how fast they feels. This to me means he can't drive well. Add to this, some people are just plain stupid and can't react. But I find the drivers in China are just plain nuts sometimes.

I have been driving in China for over 5 years.  So far, not a scratch, ticket or other problem other than getting lost.

But driving here does require you to be uber-alert and uber-aware of your surroundings.  I have seen some very crazy stuff happen around me while driving and I am amazed I don't see 10 times the accidents I do see.

The one thing that seems to be the rule here is that if another driver is ahead of you, even by a few inches, that gives them right-of-way when it comes to changing lanes, turning, etc...

And the way that the street lanes are painted doesn't really help the situation.  Often the lanes on one block will not match the position of the lanes on the previous block, so people, if they are paying attention will need to swerve just to keep in their lane.

It is very nuts out there and if you drive, you really need to be very aware of your surroundings and assume that everyone around you is going to do something unpredictable at any given moment.
