Q: How do you find a flat without going through a letting agency?

My flat's contract runs out soon and instead of renewing it, I'm thinking of moving. But I've had so much bad experience with letting agencies in the past - oh the headache - that I just can't bear the thought of dealing with them again. I've heard friends say they found theres through the landlord directly but I don't know any landlords! Help!

Hey Lolita

I haven't done it myself yet but i surely also plan on going around the letting agencies next time im going to find a new appartment. I dont know if you can read chinese, but if you can then actually there are quite alot of pages where you should be able to find an appartment without having to pay a letting agency.

I know one of my friends succesfully found an appartment through this page www.ganji.com, you could also try www58.com.

There are probably many other pages more or less the same. these pages cover the whole country and have information on almost anything you can think of so you need to do a bit of searching to find what you need.

cheers and good luck:-)

One of the best (and easiest) ways is going through a universal website like Craigslist or Gumtree.com

Usually you can find flatshares which have been advertised by other tenants, or sometimes whole flats advertised by the landlords themselves who do not ask for an intermediary fee.

Check out those websites and other similar links and you'll be sure to find something soon.
