Q: How to find the best teaching English in China job? (several questions)

How hard would it be for me to find a job with my current education/experience?

What are the best methods to go about applying to jobs?

Should I only look online or is it acceptable to send resume's to schools?

How many of my preferred items below should become required?

Which ones would be the easiest to fulfill?

Any additional information would be appreciated (first time teaching abroad and my mind is set on doing it)

About me:

Age: 26

Education: MBA (Bus Admin) and BBA (Eco, Fin, Int Bus)

Nationality: American - Native English Speaker

Work Experience: 3 years teaching experience (student teaching and assistant lecture undergraduate classes)

Ethnicity: White, blonde hair, green eyes, 5'10 (still odd for me to include this)

Teaching Certification: TEFL in Progress (est. April 15th)

Preferred items:

Guangzouh

10,000+ RMB per month

High School or College students

Housing allowance paid independent of salary

Start date after May 20, 2013 but before October 2013

What if anything do you find unrealistic about what I'm looking for?

What would make me more marketable?

Should I add anything? (if I'm asking for to little)

Lessee: You're only available during the summer (unless I misunderstand your timings) therefore only for summer camps (possible salary 8k/mo).

You want to be in Guangzouh which doesn't exist therefore no-go. Guangzhou is possible.

High school could offer that kind of salary as could third tier colleges, but your time frame is only for the summer, so 8K/mo.

If you think including your height (too short, BTW) is odd, wait until they ask for your length/girth ratio.

And, if your mind "is set on doing it," you really can find all of the answers to your questions by searching online.

Not trying to dissuade you, but not willing to spoon-feed someone who is supposed to be educated enough to research simple answers on their own, either.

MissA:

I read it differently - the guy can start during late spring, but really wants to be in a job by October at the latest.

Public high schools, colleges, and universities start their semester after Chinese New Year or in September.  You might find a training center that starts earlier.

Some schools look for international experience to make sure you wont freak out being in a different country for the first time and end up leaving them high and dry.

What I meant by "Start date after May 20, 2013 but before October 2013" is that is the time period I am available to leave for China (Before May I'm in school, after October I will need to obtain a job in the US due to money constraints). I'm looking for a 1 year contract and I have no problem being in a foreign country, have never had a problem with culture shock, and I'm use to being alone (haven't had parents since 13).

As for the height issue I know I'm quite short and my length/Girth ratio is off (I use to be a bodybuilder).

4.Finally, as for "I could find all of these answers online because with my education level the research shouldn't be a problem"... This is online, 90% of graduate school research, dissertations ect. start by providing credit to all of the people you had to ask questions to (those more experienced/intelligent in an area than yourself). Hence me coming to an answer board about teaching & learning in China.

5. Yes, Guangzhou (its at the top of the page). Thanks, for the spelling correction.

Peasant:- It is truly amazing who they let teach English in China. I think it is true what was said in "MY FAIR LADY" (Rex Harrison said) In America they have not spoken it for years. You have an MBA and a BBA and you English is poor. Many years ago when I got my masters, I would never got it, if I wrote English like Americans get away with.Franck3

I hope you find what your looking for, I have only been in China Teaching for 6 weeks and can honestly tell you to research everything first, the people on here are amazing and they answered everything I asked them,, but I did a lot of research myself.  Hope you don't think this is funny; but I read every single question asked on this site over 2/3 nights just to get a general feel for the people who lived and worked here, and doing this answered a lot of questions for me.  Good luck

First of all, I would talk to some people who have lived in Guangzhou, I have heard it is a rough place to be in China, and I think there are a lot of options.

Secondly, make sure you read up on the latest information available to foreign teachers in China. I highly recommend a variety of forums, blogs, and and expat sites. some of which include:

www.TheBeijinger.com

www.CityWeekend.cn

www.Echinacities.com

www.ChinaHot.com

www.Zhaopin.com

www.ESLForum.com

www.ESLCafe.com

www.ChinaDaily.com

www.ESLTeacherCafe.comwww.ZenJobs.com

Finally, check out the work that China Foreign Teacher's Union is doing for blacklisted agents, bad schools, and industry standards:

http://www.chinaforeignteachersunion.org

Do lots of research and Good Luck!
