What kind of company are you working? This kind of invitation letter is a business letter which can help your father to get a F visa for one year with multiple entries.
But if you want your father to stay as long as he can, you'd better apply for him a WORKING VISA in China. What I know is, a foreigner can't apply a working visa if his age is exceed 65 years old. Hope that help you!

I'm Canadian. The first time I went to China I just applied for a tourist visa. I went alone. I didn't even have a phone with a translator. I think a 30 or 60 day visa is all a person can get the first time. I had a hotel reservation, the visa asks for where you stay, if he is staying with you that is OK. The application was easy. I had no letter of invitation. I took all sorts of documents with me, bank statements etc. They only wanted my application and passport.
I drove to Ottawa ,270 kms, to drop the application off and then 3 days later had to drive that again to pick it up. The Embassies don't accept mail in applications here. I could use a firm to submit the application and then mail the visa back to me, considering my time and gas.

The Visa can (may) be extended fr 30 days once your father is here. I think you can get 2 x one month extensions.
It will depend on which country your parents are, since some Chinese Embassies do not accept mail in requests for visa, and others do not even allow individuals to request it, must use a visa agent.
But to ease your worries, please visit

for a sample by individual of invitation letter for tourist visa.
I would recommend at least a 2 entry, 60 days good for 6 months from date of issue as a minimum. Your father can enter once, and stay for 60 days, exit to Hong Kong and turn right back in for another 60 days, and after that can petition PSB for two extensions of 30 days each. That will give him a 6 months stay in China in total.

Hey thanks for that link to that letter. I am inviting my friend to stay with me and I have a letter from my school but this extra letter might be handy.

Please be aware that there are a few types of invitation letters. One for tourist visa, another for business visa, etc. Find samples for both at http://chinavisaukheadoffice.co.uk/china-visa-application-forms.htm
An American friend of mine just went through the new process of getting a tourist visa to China. He got a letter from a Chinese person, which I would recommend you do as well, as opposed to writing one yourself. The US based agency he used for the visa application ended up asking him for a photocopy of the letter writer's Chinese ID card. So whoever you get to write the letter, you'll probably want to ask them to copy their ID card for you also. They gave him a 1-year multi-entry L-visa, but he had already been issued several L-visas prior under the old rules. I think Ted's right, your old man's probably looking at a 30 or 60 day visa on his first go around.
