I don't believe they have those. None that I'm aware of anyways. I know they have teachers assistants for kindergartens etc., but as far as a teacher assistant in a university I've never heard of one nor seen one before...
The few that I know of are post graduate students enrolled at the university they are "working" at. I use quotes because those are non paid positions for students who are obtaining their PhD's. In fact, it is part of their tuition.
So, basically you would need to find one of the few universities in China that has that position and then apply as a full time student.
You would stand a better chance just getting a regular teaching job.

i want to doing it my third year of collage so i want to know if it would be allowed and what i should be doing now to prepare.

I hate to disappoint you but unless you are actually enrolled in the Chinese university and not an exchange student for a year, you will not be able to get this position.
The Chinese university would have to be from where you will obtain your diploma. In addition to being a full time post graduate student at that particular Chinese university your Chinese would have to be perfect (both oral AND written). If you are thinking of studying mainly in the US and work as a TA while doing your "year in China" it is not possible. This information was given to me by the university I worked at in Guilin AND the one I work at in Beijing.

no need to be perfect. there are lots of english thaught programmes in china nowadays... so english is fine... but a bit of chinese never hurts ;)
To be a teachers assistant your Chinese must be perfect
GuilinRaf:
I dont think you fully grasp what he means by perfect. In China, it really DOES mean perfect written and oral WITH A STANDARD NORTH EASTERN ACCENT. A Chinese teacher can have a Regional accent in his or her day to day Chinese, but their "Teaching Chinese" must be what they call "Standard Mandarin". If your Chinese is "very good for a foreigner" that will not suffice.
I only know of two or three foreigners who have this standard accent. And both are on television.
If you are still at school why don't you try a student exchange program
I don't know much about them myself however you could research it on the internet
it might be the best option for you at this point in time.
I think you said you are only 19 yrs old and to be honest with you I think you still need some guidance .and this is one way to achieve what you want.
Have a think about it anyway and check it out before you dismiss it
and the base of your question was good but the rest of it was a little Nineveh
I'm not taking the piss out of you so don't take it to hart
good luck

that was the plan but i thought it might be a good chance to to try being a T.A when i did it. that is one of the reasons i want to teach over seas so it will be easier to apply and get a good position.
GuilinRaf:
Phil is giving you the best option that I can see. Interestingly enough, the university may offer you or get you if you ask it a position as a tutor. This was the situation in Guilin, where foreign exchange students were given this opportunity to tutor or even teach one class EVEN THOUGH ENGLISH WAS NOT THEIR NATIVE LANGUAGE.
there are TA's in china, usually they even get paid and have their own office. foreigners are not yet in this positions, but this situation is changing... if u r in a program at university, u could simply approach a teach or the office to ask for this position. they might be interested to give that position to a foreigner, but probably also too scared about that step...
in my program, a girl did kind of assistant for the office in general and some teachers (but not grading etc), but didnt get paid or office at all...
bill8899:
Do you think there will be many TA opportunities for foreigners in China in the near future?
i dont think there will be many opportunities simply because foreigners usually dont stay so long in china and therefore arent a stable solution. also their prior education might differ from what is thaught in china, so they migth not be suitable neither... anyway, everything is possible in china, but that doesnt mean it is gonna be easy

sorry, this should have been an answer to the comment on my last post...
