Q: How to learn Chinese in an efficient way?

As known to many non-Chinese speaking people,Chinese is really hard to be learned, let alone to be mastered easily. Then what am I supposed to do to have some development in memorizing Chinese characters and even writing them down.

the first thing is start reading the characters, there will time you can recognise much of them. other point is speaking and practicing. if you have chinese friends try to use chinese as much as can. if you are willing to stay in china and want to built a future here so start reading, then writing , then listening , then speaking..........  best of luck snakers

Hi, I am a Chinese learner. I find Chinese is interesting. I use this free e-book and I think it is amazingly great. I recommend this to you and hope you like it.

I did not know that "Chinese" and "efficient" could be used in the same sentence without also a good dose of sarcasm. I see now it can.

I wrote a guide on how to learn Mandarin based on my 10 years of studying it (with different intensity at different times). I am fluent enough to work in a Chinese only environment, so I guess I am not too bad, however improvement is certainly still possible. It is possible to learn Chinese more or less efficiently. It is always difficult, but by following a few basic guidelines, it is possible to progress a lot faster.

Why bother?  Seriously.

Just luxuriate in the freedom that comes with being oblivious.  It's empowering.

If a tree falls and no one was there to see it, does that mean I don't have to return anybody's shout?

Chinese being hard to speak is an urban legend. The grammar is way way simpler than many Western languages grammar, like Russian, Finnish, German, French, etc. Vietnamese have more tones and they are harder. Chinese is very logical actually, many compounded words which are self-evident. Tones, well, if you can remember a tune, same for tones usage. Self-study one or two hours a day, not more. Like, in one session, learn some sentence patterns and some new words. Review the previous lessons. Of course, a Chinese to help you to pronounce and check you use the sentence patterns right is a big plus. Don't try more than one or two new characters a day. Living in a small town without much foreigners and escapes helps a lot. Go practice by doing your grocery every day at the local market.
