Q: How long before homosexual marriage is open and legal in China?

I am wondering what people think about this.

A long long long long time I think.

Chinese people are - at best - tolerant of gay people and gay culture. And at worst, they are incredibly discriminating and biased. This, once again, is a result of China's massively short-sighted education system, which teaches kids to follow rather than lead, and to judge what is 'abnormal'.

This is a crying shame because I know tons of Chinese gays, I even taught gay schoolkids who had to keep it under wraps for fear of bullying and punishment - though not from other school kids but from the TEACHERS!! How backwards is that?!

Places like Shanghai and Beijing are slowly opening up the the idea of homosexuality, with frequent gay pride events and gay clubnights, but as far as gay marriage is concerned, I think it'll be when hell freezes over (probably due to China's pollution) before they give legal nuptial rights to homosexuals. If you look at the history books, it was outlawed until recently. Even in western history it was/is definitely a divisive issue: bible belt America, or the north of England for example.

Still, as long as they keep flying that rainbow flag, perceptions will change and prejudice will turn to educated opinion.

I don't think it's impossible, China could surprise you.

For example, the CCTV NEWS reaction to the Chinese celebritiy that re-tweeted (or re-weibo-ed?) an anti-homosexuality remark about NY legalizing gay marriage. They condemed that celebrity and urge for a tolerance of everybody's right to love and marry whomever they want.

I was pleasantly surprised!

I don't care about propaganda, political agenda, bla bla bla crap behind it. What I noticed was CCTV actually publicy 'un-supportive' of anti-homosexualities.

Well, first off I'd like to say that before China would ever pass that kind of law, Taiwan probably would. Second, you have to remember how extremely different generations are here. China has gone through a lot of crap in recent history, people are still alive who have gone through that. China is still changing extremely quickly. They don't enforce any type of equality laws whatsoever, whether for humans or animals, and many other developed countries do not have laws allowing gay marriage rights either.

However, Asia was not brought up as a Christian continent. There were even Emperors who had male lovers, although I wouldn't say that homosexuality was ever acceptable in China. Gay rights is so low on the totem pole right now, there's not even a predictable timeline for when it could ever happen. They'd bring back legally having more wives first, I would think. After all, that was outlawed less than a hundred years ago, and is still practiced even though it is illegal. They just call the second wife a girlfriend or mistress.

China's views on homosexuality are like America's views in the 50's or 60's. It's taken decades of activism in the US and only a few states have legalized gay marriage so far. If the US, a far more liberal country, can't accept gay marriage then what hope does China have of accepting it?

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
