Q: How many foreigners are currently learning Mandarin?

I can't find any accurate statistics for this online. Also, how does it compare with say ten years ago?

Well be more specific if you want details! Do you want to know how many are studying worldwide or just in China? And why do you even want to know accurate statistics? Seriously dude, you need to get out more!

I can help with the "In Mainland China" stats a bit:

According to the 2010 census done by the National Bureau of Statistics of China, as of November 1, 2010, of the 1.02 million foreigners living in China (foreigner meaning from HK, Macao, TW or other countries), there were 202,482 people are studying in China. Although "studying" in this case may or may not mean learning mandarin, (as it was not really defined), I'd say there is a pretty good bet that most of those 200k are probably studying it to some degree.

Unfortunately, the 2010 census is the first time that it took into account foreigners living in China, so I doubt that you will be able to find information on foreigners studying mandarin in China 10 years ago.
