Q: How many of your teacher friends got popped for visas yesterday?

The PSB grabbed over 20 foreign teachers yesterday from Haidian schools for working on L & F visas.  My roomie was one of them and they held her for 6 hours and make her write a sort of confession and apology. Now she has to leave China in 10 days and cannot come back for 5 years. She also met other foreign teachers at the PSB office who applied to phony ads on the Beijinger and maybe they put some ads here too. Be careful people if you do not have a Z visa. They told her because of complaints filed against a woman agent they are checking every school where she places teachers, and they are doing random checks in the subway this whole month as well.  I need a new roomate (female) if anyone is interested (Wudaokou)

The woman actually has advertisement here - I just saw it a few minutes ago. Bad news for sure. I think a lot of foreigners are going to regret using this lady by the end of this month.

Wow, none but considering I don't have too many close friends here I wouldn't actually know. That random checking at the subway must just be in different parts of the city because I haven't seen any random checking going on.

That is why my the VERY first requirement is VISA, VISA and VISA in any workplace. Law is a b'tch, you need to follow it directly. The conversation with foreigners is short. Guys, while looking for the job always ask about the VISA first, and then about salary and bonuses.

Wow that's mental. I remember getting various calls from said lady and other agencies when I first arrived in Beijing and was looking for a job. Glad I went for a legit school in the end.

Talk about great timing,  I just left my job at work when three of the PSB goon squad showed up and made all the foreigners line up in the hall way with their passports.  They took way one of my favorite teachers. I found out today she has to leave China in six more days. Boy am I glad I didn't listen to the recruiter/visa agent.

Yes, I've said it before, I'll say it again: no Z visa, no teaching.  The end.

And as an added warning, make sure your Z visa is from the same province you're actually living in. The authorities can and will bust you if you're working in the wrong region.

Sounds like an isolated situation of someone either pissing off the wrong people or not paying her due in bribes.

I always find it interesting when in China they say they are going to "crack down" on something. When in reality it typically means they target a few people to make an example out of.  In this case it sounds like they targeted one agent....meanwhile theres still thousands of other shady ones posting on the beijinger right now.

Can anyone actually confirm that the increased presense at subway stations is actually checking FOREIGNERS ?  I have noticed the increase prescense at a few stations for about a month now and not once have I ever seen them stop a foreigner, it's always random Chinese people they are stopping. Anyone seeing something different?

Other people will certainly disagree with me on this. But in a situation like this I would advice people not to sign  any sort of admission to guilt, I know the cops can be very pressing about this and it can scare people easily. But from what I've seen happen to other people I havent seen anyone get in any more trouble by not signing a confession, they simply claim they were the victim and they didn't know. By signing a confession it makes it harder to ever come back in China. I have seen other people though who got in trouble for a visa, were forced to leave, and then were back in a month on a proper visa.  Keep in mind that in this cause it's us foreigners are usually the victim of shady agents, don't confess guilt of anything, let the police know you were the victim and you had no idea.

As far as a Z visa....common sense says to only take a job if you get a Z visa.  I will say though that there are situations where you are actually better protected by not having a Z visa, it actually makes it a lot easier to get out of a bad work situation and still find a new job quite easily.  Of course you run the risk of getting caught if you do this, so that's the downside. The upside is you have more freedom and choices to move around between jobs until you find something you really like, and then demand for a Z Visa.

Can anyone share with us the name of the agency or person putting this ad's up who is in question.

Far too often when things like these occur I see a lot of people unwilling to say the name of the Agency or person.

I think we should all work together to help keep people safe and share this type of information with people incase in the future someone is ever looking for a job and they google an agency's name they can see threads like this.

Why do I get the feeling that this is building up to you "exposing" this person in the very near future? It just seems like you have an agenda.

@ traveler

1) I don't know this person/agency, that's why I asked.  I haven't even worked in the teaching field for well over a year aside from some tutoring I do for friends.

2) My only "Agenda" is more transparency. Since the PBS have already gotten involved and foreigners are being deported as a result. I think at this point there is no need to hide the name of the agency.  Put it out there for everyone to see, in hopes that in the future if this agency stays in business or is back in business maybe another foreigner new to China won't fall victim to them.

Traveler:

Foreigners get deported because they are working illegally. Most foreigners (though not all) that are working illegally are unskilled, non-native speakers, out to cheat China. If they get caught, then they are no different than illegal immigrants in any other country.

I will concede there are times when qualified people need to take the risk, but they can afford to be choosier about the schools they pick to work at. I think with Internet and international media exposures, there is little excuse these days for getting caught as an illegal "by accident."

In Guilin, we had this one guy who was working illegally. However, when the PSB caught up with him, they found out that he actually had a Masters Degree from a university in the UK, so he got his FEC. His thesis was in teaching English to non native speakers who were adults.

The fact that the guy was born and raised in Kenya astounded them even more.....
