You will have to make an appointment on website at Guangzhou Consulate.  Go there on date and time given, bring your passport, pay $ 75 US dollars (this price is 2 years old), and you get the new pages installed in less than one hour.
But be aware, pages can be added only once, if already did with existing passport, you will need a new one

From what I know you can get a new passport once you have used up all of  your pages on your previous passport. I've never heard of adding extra pages but you can get a new passport once your old one runs out of all the pages. It shouldn't take long I had to replace mine it was only a couple of weeks.

According to the United States Department website, the current cost is USD 82.00  It is done on the spot but you will need to make an online appointment by using the website of the local Consulate General or the Embassy under "Citizen Services".

Look here:  http://travel.state.gov/passport/fees/fees_837.html

So hold on... it costs over 80 bucks for new pages, and 110 for a new passport. What the...

And why is it even that expensive to begin with - I didn't know embassies had become for-profit agencies...

Once upon a time, and this goes back less than six years ago, there was no charge to add pages to a United States passport -- none at all. And then somewhere along the line, it changed.

If I recall right, it was around May of 2009 that the change occur.  They posted a notice on their website giving 30 days notice, and after that, they started charging $ 75, I guess now is $ 82.
To add pages takes less than one hour, for a new pasport request takes 10 to 14 days at least.

And yes, they have curtailed many services, started charging for others, and have become a "profit center".  But what really pisses me off is that nowdays instead of seeing proud Marines on guard duty, all you see are locals.  It looks and feels more like a Chinese Embassy than a US Embassy.

GuilinRaf:

So true!

I had never been to the US Embassy before and I did not see ONE Marine anywhere! Since a significant number of my relatives have proudly served in The Corps, I was truly disappointed...

The UK - British do not add pages, you must apply for a new passport. My previous passport of 10 years still had 6 years to run however it was full of visa's and stamp's. Having contacted the consulates in Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and London, all invited me to make application for a new one. UK- British passports are now only issued in Hong Kong as it was discovered over the years thousands had been stolen from the previously issuing consulates.

I forget how much I paid, I know it was not very much (under 200 RMB). You need to go to the website of the US Embassy in Beijing (or the appropriate Consulate if outside of Beijing) and register online for an appointment. They will give you online a date/time and a "code number" that you need to print out and take with you on the day of your appointment.

The guards will check this number with a print out that they will have as well.

Once inside, you give your passport to the right official, and pay the amount indicated (which the website already told you as I forgot the exact amount). I only waited 20 minutes for them to return my passport with the new pages added. This was two years ago.

I did mine in person in Hong Kong. Pretty darn easy I would say; drop off in morning, pick up in afternoon.  $656 hk

* be sure to read their website carefully for all the little details which could potentially trip you up.

I can confirm that as of 2012.10.26, it costs USD 85.00 to have pages added to a United States passport.  One must also download and complete a certain form from either the United States Embassy webpages or the local Consulate General Webpage.

If one has access to Beijing, then I would recommend the Embassy as they will add 48 extra pages while the Consulate are limited to adding 24 extra pages.  Additionally, United States Citizens Services hours can be quite erratic in many of the Consulates -- for example, Shenyang will also receive U.S. citizens on Tuesdays and Thursdays, in the afternoon.

The process to add pages takes about one hour.

It changed in January 2011, I think or around then.  The Embassy sent out a notice to everyone that was registered announcing of the upcoming change and advising anyone to come to get the free pages before the cost went up.

Also, in the old days, all you had to do was to present the passport and it had pages to added to it.  Now, there's an entire application process, just like for a new passport.

One needs DS-4085 from the Embassy website or they won't even do it.  Completed prior to arrival.
