I plan to be here probably until around mid-2017 and then back to Canada to build up something around Vancouver.
China is a great place but you can't really stick around here forever. Especially after these horribly polluted winters. Unless maybe you move south or something...
So how much longer will you be here? And where is your next stop?
I ask myself this same question far too regularly..... :(
I already left, a few days ago. I didn't see my life going anywhere there and I don't think China will be a particularly nice place for expats to live within a few years.
Robk:
Where did you take off to?
I find Chinese are just becoming more indifferent towards foreigners rather than hostile. But that could easily change if some sort of war broke out.
It depends a lot on the region and city... I hear Beijing, Shanghai and some larger southern cities aren't taking too kindly to foreigners.

Back to Ireland, the old sod that spawned me. Not many (good) jobs here so i'm using it as a base to recover from years of air pollution and "harro"s before i go back to teaching. Right now i'm looking at Eastern Europe and/or Russia as my next frontier.
I won't be able to get a work visa because I'm 60 this year. I went back to Canada earlier than expected this year. I applied for a Q2 visa, my wife of 10 years is from Guangxi, but I have to get a return ticket to Canada despite the fact I we would like to live in China for a few more years. I don't understand that rule. But I guess we'll (my wife will go back to China with me) have to pay.
I also think it may get harry for expats in the future too.
Robk:
I don't understand. I got the same visa and it was transferred into a Residential Permit and I can stay in China for at least a year... in and out as I please and I am from Canada. I didn't need a return ticket...
I'm here until I get a letter from China requesting Trumps Americans to go because we got Trumped lol, than I'll move to my friends school in Dubai. So I expect to be here until 2030 at least.
Robk:
My Chines wife was not in China around the time my Work visa expired. The government in Guangxi, Beihai wanted her physically present. Other Than that I don't understand either. I took the chance and purchases a return ticket anyway. When my wife and I get back to Beihai I'll transfer it to a resident visa. Seems like a waste of money, but what does a guy do? The people who make these rules seem to only obey what they are told.
I plan to leave on 4th July this year. For me, China has run its course and a number of factors have led me to the conclusion that now is the time to move on.
Planning for relocation is my biggest bugbear. I have given myself plenty of time so I can thoroughly plan matters related to finding accommodation in my own country and the related job search.
Right now I feel afflicted by two contrasting emotions that are ripping each other apart. Part of me can't wait to get out of here. Part of me feels strong trepidation about the future and what it holds i.e. can I successfully make the transition back to life in the UK.

If you plan to stay try Shenzhen man, you won't feel that way here. Its the perfect blend of western life and Chinese at the same time with HK near by.
The reason I'm still in China is mostly laziness and because my wife has a job here. If it were only up to me I would have left long ago, I can work from anywhere in the world with a laptop while keeping an office here or in Germany for legal purposes. No complaints though, there are ups and downs, good and bad days, but I live a comfortable life.
ironman510:
Sounds like your a stock market guy like myself. My office is also on my laptop, well Surface Pro
RandomGuy:
Not a stock market myself, but I mostly work with an already established client list through the internet so all I really need is a good connection or a good VPN.
Robk:
Yeah I do UI/UX design, and can work pretty much from anywhere. China presents lots of technical issues so a VPN is a must.
Your reason is exactly the same reason why I stick around here. Well, I have a place here and if I stay here I don't have to pay taxes back in Canada (which is nice for saving). I always felt like, if you can earn a good living... and you can work from anywhere... then it should be somewhere that you enjoy right?
I don't enjoy after being here a few months now, ESPECIALLY during the winter.
I'm about to go back to China from Canada for a 2 year vacation. I love china.
I left a year ago and couldn't be happier with my decision. Got an entry level job at a law firm within 3 weeks of returning and will be starting law school next year. 1-2 years of ESL after college would've been great but 4.5 was a waste of time. I fooled myself into thinking I was being productive moving into a teaching role at a prestigious uni and doing a bunch of tutoring on the side. Truth is I was just putting off reality and saving some money. Everyone's situation is different but if you're young and looking to break into something, China isn't a great place anymore. Not to mention the pollution and quality of life issues.
Robk:
That is true, China has its Golden Age, it it was cool to be around during that time but now things have changed and the pollution doesn't seem to be getting much better overall.
Congrats on the job!
Another few years. I always say "I have no plans to leave". Love hate relationship with it. Pollution the main hate, food the main love! :P
