Is there some kind of set amount or general standard on how much money Chinese people are expected to have in their bank accounts when applying for a short-stay EU Schengen visa? As with most countries in the world, one of the required documents when applying for a visa, is evidence that you have enough financial resources to fund your trip without resorting to illegal work etc. But I haven't found any details on what sum is considered adequate. My husband's not a millionaire but we have saved more than enough to fund the trip; I'm just not sure if embassies think it's enough.

A little less than €100 per day. It depends on type of accommodation (hotel vs. private)
Remember there is also a requirement for how much the travel insurance covers.
If you are going on a private tour, you can have a relative submit an invitation and in that say that they will cover your expenses, then you don't have to have the money yourself. Maybe you don't need a tourist visa but a family visit visa.

Thanks. The requirements are slightly infuriating in my opinion, like proof of accomodation for each day spent in the Schengen zone. I mean, what if your plans are flexible? I don't like to have each day planned out in advance! Where do you get the insurance from and is it expensive? They really try to make things difficult!

When we applied this spring, we went for the family visit visa. I wrote the invitation for my wife myself, and provided information from my bank account from back home as proof of financial support. At the time of applying we didn't have any specific plans, but we did visit 4 Schengen countries in total.
As far as I remember the big difference between family visit visa and tourist visa is that for the family visit visa you need to provide proof of employment of the applicant, this may be more cumbersome, but according to the immigration authorities I spoke to this will be "best practice" for married people. This is of course an answer giving by immigration on the basis of "what if we would like to apply for a residence permit for my wife in some years"
Nessquick:
I do not know Scandi, about all in your country. We was visiting my home in summer, visa aplication done in May.. My wife is not employed yet, she stay at home with our son at that time. no bank account proof, mine or her's and even invitation not need to write. I just wrote my address as the place we stay in the aplication form and provide the married certificate. thats all, nothing else except passport and photos.
Scandinavian:
different countries have different application processes, strange they have not made that uniform, but then again the EU countries are very different
If you refer to the security deposit, I believe 200,000 RMB will suffice.
Scandinavian:
It will depend on the main destination country. There is a big difference between staying in Norway and Greece in terms of how much it cost to find a hotel, and eat. The best is to call the visa application center for the relevant country and ask.
Moonlake:
Wow, 200,000 is a lot. We plan to spend most of our time in Germany and are planning to stay in low-budget accomodation.

Edit: I misunderstood. This is not the deposit sometimes required, but just the means of substinence.
To answer your question you need to specify which country your are applying in since the rules differ from country to country as already stated.
Some countries require deposits, some just require you to support yourself.
In my home country, Denmark, there is no such thing as tourist visa for Chinese except when in a group.
