It depends what you are beginning. A new job or the search for a job. If it's a new job how long is it until you get your first pay? If you're looking for a job how soon do you think you can get one?
Will you have accommodation provided when you arrive or do you need to find, and pay for your own? If you have accommodation provided what will you need to buy that doesn't come with the place?
Where will you be living? Some cities are cheaper than others.

if your pay arrives 2 weeks after a months work, with housing provided about 600 dollars for living 6 weeks, a 100 dollars a week for a tier 2 city, less than 10 million people, tier 1 big city add 25 percent.
if your in tier 3 or 4 city, reduce by 20 percent.
you may be paid at the end of the following month or the first month is always late for some bullshit excuse, so budget for 8 weeks with out pay just in case.
naturally convert this to rmb, but its pretty accurate for most of our new teachers. if they dont provide housing, dont take the job, try and get a 6 month contract if you want to move to a better position, when you get here, jobs come to you all the time if you network and socialize well,
Depending on your living situation you have to factor in start up costs like buying a cell phone (maybe), some appliances and furnishings and misc. start up expenses. You can eat for cheap so maybe 500 or so per week for food if you eat at home. Make sure to have enough money for a plane ticket home in case things don't work out. I'd say to be safe have 10,000- 15,000 rmb when you get here. That gives you cash so you don't have to worry about money before pay day and you can run away if you have to.

This happened to me when I moved to Shanghai from another city in China and I had to borrow money from people close to me which was embarrassing. The company will probably never give you an advance or help you with money especially if they are an English school. Also, if your school or company cheats you, you may even owe them money after awhile or they will withhold your pay. I would say bring at least $1000 to spend on necessities plus enough for a return ticket as well unless things go really bad, and make sure the company/school you work for is legit and will pay you on time and give you a visa.
