Q: How were the Chinese at making swords back in the day?

How did they measure up compared to other swords coming out of other areas at the time.

eg. Manchurian, Korean, Japanese, etc.

Thanks

It depends on how back you go

During the early Chinese dinasties (before 700AD), the Chinese sword making was more advanced than in the surrounding area and far better than any technique that they had in Europe. After the 700AD Japan started to introduce the Chinese and Korean techniques.

During the middle ages the Japanese sword making continued improving, while the Chinese techniques were in decline

I agree with Erokese; the Japanese had better swords than the Chinese.

And they had ninjas, sumurais and all sorts of cool sword fighters.

The Chinese used bamboo swords until 1789 when they learned what other countries were doing with their gun powder.

Everybody knows Japan is famous for their swords. I even saw a documentary once on apprentices becoming master sword makers. It was an interesting segment as they featured a foreigner who learned the language, customs and even married one of the sword makers daughters. Everything was detailed to how they make the blade to how long it is supposed to stay hot until becoming cooled and that one mistake can cause the blade to break.

I have yet to see any documentaries on sword making from China, Korea etc., The Japanese are also popular for the Ginsu knife! Wait can't tell where that came from it's a knife so it's irrelevant anyways.....(Drunk!!
