Q: How would you have deal with this?

had a chinasmack like experience last week. There was this 40 yo in the metro arguing with an old man. Had the feeling that the guy will do something stupid. Once I arrived at my station, zhaojia bang road, i went off and kept an eye on them. The old man just walked out when this guy jumped out and punched him straight in the face, then he look at him and went back. Even if i convinced myself long ago not to interfere and trying not to give a shit about what chinese do to each other i couldn't just leave. Went back, grab this guy by his neck  and throw him out of the metro.... Actually i wished he would react but he didn't...

Suddenly just some police popped out...not sure what will happened to this guy. The  old man, 85 yo, was like bleeding from eye and head...

I've only seen guys girly punch. I would've broken it up but not grabbed the guy.

Lord_hanson:

most fights are girly fights but not all. I once saw a crazy fight. There was 2 gangs of 20 fighting with sticks just outside my home. Han vs Xinjiang, the Xinjiang guys won and when the Han ran away two fell over and were beaten badly. Later the police came. Parked the car, sat there for 10 minutes then left without doing anything. I am glad the police work so hard here.

Go Hulk on the perp, that's what. I can't stand people who harm others.

bill8899:

That's nice, but in China, for a foreigner, that costs about 15k rmb.

I can attest to Ted's claims. In an earlier post, I saw two cops slappy fighting for like 2-3 minutes with neither of them hurt at all.

It was embarrassing to see men fight like that, let alone police officers. It was like they were fighting to let out their anger but not enough (or could not) to hurt the guy so they couldn't get in to trouble.

I am not sure, but it reminded me of a cat fight in the third grade. Don't rely on cops. I think I would have done the same thing as you... punching an old guy like that and thinking he can get away with it.

In a country with rule of law and a good samaritan law I would have intervened without any hesitation, but in China it could mean troubles for you, one of them or both could see an opportunity to make some bucks from that rich laowai (yes many Chinese still think that every foreigners are rich) and claim that you attacked him/them, in a Chinese court you wouldn't stand a chance even against a waidiren.

It sucks but it's true. Any situation can very quickly turn into a racist attack on you at no fault of your own.

That was a defining moment for you, Mr. Nicholas. Certainly, you're to be applauded for your efforts. You did what you felt nobility demanded of you. On the other hand, Eorthisio is right. We mustn't forget that we're in a country as visitors, and outside of our roles as teachers or whatever we happen to be, those in power would prefer that we remain only spectators to the things -- be they good or bad in our eyes -- that happen around us. Should we step beyond that role, we do risk being sued by little monsters or even being kicked out. I am grateful that I have not yet found myself in this same kind of situation you did.

Eorth is 100% right. If the police see an opportunity they will do whatever it takes to pin it on you. It could be as simple as the guy who punched the old man does not have the money to pay so in order to get the necessary compensation the police will make all witnesses say it was you. This happens very often. I have met many locals who said they were witness to an accident but was forced to write a statement saying it was the person who stopped to help.

Coming from a civilized country you'd think the victim would raise hell and never go along with it but this is China they are taught from very young that 'honorable people' end up dead.

My advice is to stay out of anything and get as far away from it as possible. In my own experience, I stopped a guy from punching his girlfriend and it cost me 14,000 rmb.

Lord_hanson:

How did you stop the guy? With a baseball bat?

right, that what i thought in the very beginning. Seriously i have been invoved in fights before and i know that it always depends on where you are (city) and which districts. The  fact that i was in shanghai and in that area...if i was in some second rate city i would have probably walk away...sorry to even think that but...as u said..

iWolf:

Mr Lord_hansen, I just grabbed his arm as he was about to throw another punch (maybe the 10th) at her and told him to knock it off. He punched me like a girl and I gave him one back. Then they left. That was it.

About 30 minutes later 10 police in riot gear arrived and took me away in handcuffs. After 2 days at the police station, finally a cop who could speak english told me that I had to pay the money or wait in prison until the court case (3-6 months) when I would be found guilty and deported.

Apparently my single punch ruined his potential career as a pop star/model and 14k would solve the problem. Easy decision, I paid and walked out to the laughter of the guy I punched and his now reconciled girlfriend.

Lesson learned.

You did the right thing plan and simple, I don't believe in over-thinking these things, that only breeds inaction. I ended up in hospital once for doing something similar and I don't regret it for a moment.

nicholasba:

yeah, but still if i was in another city and if the guy would have react, i ll end up in paying his hospital...not cool...

After re-reading your question, two questions of my own emerge and I'll ask each of them in a single post.

and the questions are?...

Ah, I didn't want to monopolize this thread, so I asked them in a new thread. It's one of the new questions, probably unanswered.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
