Q: How would you solve this?Somebody got hurt very bad

Just got a call from a woman who replied my interpreting ad(yeah i do translations: chinese/italian mainly). But she doesn't need an interpreter but a lawyer apparently.

Her brother is in a jail (today is the 10th day) for assaulting a Chinese man on the higway. The Chinese first asked for his broken nose  100,000 RMB now he wants 80,000 to settle it.  Apparently the Italian guy refused to meet a lawyer  and the Chinese girlfriend of this italian advised him not to contact the embassy.

What do you think?

I'd be inclined to ask why she said not to get in contact with his embassy?

Does she know the bloke who her 'boyfriend' had a scrap with? Could this be s scam for compo and she will do a runner?

The very first thing anyone should do on being detained abroad is contact their consular services.

If he did contact the embassy they would tell him to engage a lawyer. They at least might be able to point him towards a somewhat decent lawyer, I don't think they'd be of much help aside from that though.

I doubt the lawyer would be able to do much other than help negotiate the compensation he will need to pay.

Even if nothing happens, always contact the embassy, otherwise the whole thing can disappear with no documents or proof of anything. It's a CYA (covery your ass) in case you disappear without a trace.

Stiggs:

Yep, CYA.

I think that when your embassy is involved, and everyone knows it, it's a good deterrent if people decide they want to f**k with you because they know the local law won't do anything.

Having the embassy at least know what is happening and who is involved could be what makes a corrupt police official decide it's not worth playing his usual games this time and just do it legally instead.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
