Q: I am troubled naming babies/children/teens/adults in China is such a chore. why me?

why do they want/need an English name? ..My wife I suggested at least half a dozen to... settled on Michele ma belle... but I prefer and she prefers Yunhua...  so why bother the exercise

daughter wanted English name...  so i gave her one.....  she does use it sometimes, but what the hell for ..Jamie or Jiaxin.

And now I am a "namer", friends and family come from miles around to get their English name. For me it is a pretty special thing, what I  name my son/daughter............  nobody can just change it.

think I will ask my son, back home if he would be happy if I called him "wuqi"  or "zujin"from now on....  seems how I am in China.

You can set yourself up as some sort of mystical foreign guru charging 5000 RMB a pop for the baby/child/teen/ adult to go through a ritual (a different one for each age group) where they come out with an english name.

All you need is 2 sets of random names taken out of a book: male and female

make a big thing of selecting one (at random) and they leave with a name card with the new English name.

I suggest at Kindergartens I'm working, all kids have English names. I ask TA to name all chairs and beds in Kindy with name stickers, so each kid has her/his chair and bed. I also have my chair and spare (kiddy) bed named. Kids can learn my name through the tag on my chair, and I know who's who through their chair tags.

I always call them by English names at our class, because when kid hears her/his English name, they must change language, and speak English.

The other thing is, I don't speak Chinese much, and it's very difficult to memorize Chinese names, but I don't tell them that! I just memorised present and past CCP premier's names, as Xi and Huu (me with deep voice and green eyes).

Don't forget to get a little silk bag and put some shiny stones and chicken bones in it.

You can throw the stones and bones on the floor as you hum incantations.

That should be a service worth a bottle of beer or two.  You could have real fun with that .
