Iam making a small hand out to give to parents that ride e bikes with there children
Protect your head
Protect your childs head
Wear a helmet
this will be written in Chinese,Im going to try and add this into my English lesson as well at the kindergarten.
if the Chinese are all about family then they should be about making sure there children dont get hurt.
if I can change some peoples minds about wearing a bike helmet then I just might have saved a life.
love to hear your thoughts on this.
I think its a good idea
you can fix broken bones but you cant fix a broken head.
Thanks. Your idea is brilliant. Some Chinese they don't protect well because they don't want to spend money on the protection. Education is the key to let them emphasize on the safety.

Pretty friendly remarks. Thanks. If you pay attention, all of my comments are ganic and original.

I think doing it at the kindergarten is the better option - most others will just ignore it - "silly foreigners...".
Chinese 'say' they care about family, how many times have you seen them let their small child run out into the street.
They just don't care, even about their own lives.
Good idea !
Worth trying.
Chinese may or may not care about their families, but it surely proves that you care about others.
If the idea is well received, you can try to tie up helmet shops (giving them the idea of free advertisement) to to give child's helmet free with adult's helmet.
It is better to try and fail than not to try at all.
Shining_brow:
I'd suggest that an adult's helmet be offered free with the child's helmet....
Someone posted similar on Reddit a while ago. this wasn't about wearing safety helmets but was to promote safe ways to look after a child.

Simplified documents, in Chinese, no how to look after your babies sensibly.

Exactly why I'd never leave my child alone with anyone in her family.
Good idea man.
Can I suggest including a few reasons why it's a good idea, sort of like the pictures of diseased lungs on cigarette boxes or the graphic anti drink drive ads on TV. People need to see a reason sometimes.
Maybe google some statistics, or diagrams of what happens to the brain when the head hits the road, and how the head is heavy and naturally bounces onto the road when you fall off a bike.
I have to admit I take mine on the ebike without a helmet.
No excuse really.
Thanks for the heads up Rob.
I am off to taobao to buy a couple of bike helmets.
Rob. Can you wechat me your leaflet? I will print them out and send them to my daughters school.
I gave out 5 handouts this morning on the way to work only to be be laughed at,but I shall not give up.
it only makes me want to get the word out even more.
I gave out some to the parents at the kindergarten as well this morning.same reaction.
I guess most people find them inconvenient to lug around and always have to learn the hard way. I am with you on how important it is... nothing hits home like a story... so add one or two of them to your leaflet.
For example, I am a VERY skilled and cautious motorcycle driver (took and passed certified courses). I was riding down an empty street at night, just a little over the speeding limit... should not have mattered as there was absolutely no cars at all. However, a pothole the size of a Buick and a few feet deep, just sprang out of nowhere. No warnings signs, caution tape or anything. I hit the brakes as quickly as I could because I didn't have enough time to swerve out of the way... Not enough time and the bike went down and I was rolling on the pavement.
No way to avoid it... I just had to take the hit. Because I had a helmet, I was left with some serious scrapes and bumps. If I didn't wear it (for whatever lame reason), I would have broken my neck... or scraped off half my face.
You may not look cool (although I like a full-face black helmet so it does look cool), and it make be a pain in the ass to lug around or really hot to wear in the summer... You may think you are super cautious or very skilled... but shit happens... beyond your control.
Chinese aren't logical people... they just go off instinct or emotion. So you should keep this mind when doing up your leaflet...

"I guess most people find them inconvenient to lug around"
Sounds just like their attitude to children...
;I gave out a hand out yesterday and the mother didnt read it and her child threw is back in my face.
I have given out about 30 handouts so far and people seem to laugh at me.or dont even bother to read it.
Im getting new ones made up this weekend different than the ones Im giving out.better than the ones Im giving out.
see how that goes.

When I get Chinese flyer, I always accept it and ... I hand the same flyer to another person, who's handing the same flyers down the street.
Flyers are like challenge to me: ''I never say 'no' and I never threw it on the floor or garbage."
I think, you need me for the flyers.
Englteachted:
I'm telling you this for your own sanity, stop. Chinese individually will not give you serious consideration. Do you have a lot of Chinese friends? Have a group of over 10 people randomly walk up, take flyers, then start asking you questions about it, and talking to each other about it. Chinese are programmed to be followers
Some people are just beyond help, they're the lost causes but even if you only make one or two think outside of their oblivious box you can count it as a success.
RobRocks:
trying to get the teachers that i work with to support this is very hard to do.
Stiggs:
It's probably some sort of face thing. I also doubt they care enough to bother.
well let me just say this that at the kindergarten I work at trying to raise an idea about wearing a helmet on a bike is not allowed.
I have been a kindergarten English teacher in China for 16 years,Iam a creative person.Iam good at what I do.
after 13 years of working in the same kindergarten the people in power dont want you to think or do any thing that is good, anything that is good they take it away from from you.if you try and think they take it away from you.
I care about the children I teach,I always try and do a good job in the class, but you cant do much with the children as you are not allowed to.
Im pissed off right now fucking pissed off.
I feel very empty about where I work,I feel that its not a good place to be,it used to be good but its not any more.
Im not giving up out side of the kindergarten about wearing a helmet,I just wont be doing it at the kindergarten.
icnif77:
I'd say 'cool down' and take as 'you are interfering into Chinese matter'.
At least that's how Chinese see you as laowai teaching anything else than English.
I usually just observe and let 'eppur si muove'. You know, TIC or ''it's none of our business ....''
Your action is humane, but it isn't much different than as you would try to teach Chinese not to spit and piss&shit in the middle of the pavement.
Englteachted:
I guess I was a little late. I understand what you're going through.
There's a lot behind the thinking (or lack of).
You just got to understand that attempting to go through with this willl cause you to go crazy before you can make any headway. Focus on your kids and family.
Robk:
I am very sorry to hear that and that is EXACTLY why I left the ESL world. Cause Chinese management was always holding me down... consider opening your own school or doing your own tutoring.
These people only care about making money... everything else is expendable and anything that makes waves is a threat.
since I started this people are not very open to the idea, one out of 20 people, smile and say thank you but thats about it.
I really think schools and kindergartens all have to get in on the idea about wearing a helmet.
handing out a flyer is not enough.
but Im just not sure on how to go about doing this.
Robk:
You are fighting an very steep uphill battle. Even one in twenty isn't bad.
If you want to make a difference you may need to spread your stories to news stations and mass media. A laowai trying to bring about change in China is always met with severe countermeasures.
Try telling them to look left before blindly pulling out of a side street
It will never work unless the government starts paying for health care.....Then you will be damn sure they will make you wear a helmet....but if you pay for the bill....They don't care if you wear a helmet or not....

Keep up the fight
