Q: I love/enjoy these tropical rains.......... everybody scurrying for cover..what;s the big deal?
My wife is the worst, and the family, .... a little evening downpour is great in my mind........ can't be too much mercury or other stuff in the rains......... can there? ..... thunder and lightning and the rains right now are, to me, BEAUTIFUL ........... God, I love this place in China!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. ...I am at the computer and looking out from my covered balcony...... it's loud and close!!!!!!!!!!

I watched them do just that yesterday. Scurrying like they were on fire or chased by a pack of wolves. Always makes me chuckle. Good times. 
I used to love the rain.
Then, four years in Guilin made me hate and I do mean HATE the rain.....

is it really that ongoing/neverending ?? I thought Guilin was OK...... I have lived in Hope BC, where we would get socked in for 10 days.... didn't really like that, but it was easy to get out.... hop in a car and go................... here (China) ...maybe it would be a depressing place (Guilin) ...fun to visit but don't stay is what I am guessing...Right???

About staying in Guilin, that is a very personal decision.
I have never liked the countryside and Guilin, as a small city , is just a bit "too country" for me so after three years I was already sick of the place.
However, many people love the landscape and the "smallness" etc. so the things that drove me away could be precisely the things that would make others love it.
The rain is constant in the spring time. From constant pour to non-stop drizzle. The walls are wet with condensation. Clothes take three days or more to dry (and if they dont dry by the third day, they smell bad).
Many also find the heat and humidity in the summer oppressive. For me, that just means beer and fan or A/C.
However, do talk to Ted about Guilin, since I believe he loved it. That way you can have both sides of the coin.

The Chinese cities I have been to are new, big and beautiful. I like rustic, I like Guilin as soon as I got there, my hotel was next to the walkin gstreets and parks. The city was small enough that it was easy for me to get around and learn it. Then I had good luck with women there. beijing no luck only tea scammers. But it did really rain. My Gf told me the river would rise and it never did, so maybe it rains more other years.
I love it too. The louder the thunder the better. Being inside and seeing people run around in panic on the street is great, but being on the street and seeing how miserable people look if there is just a tiny bit of rain is my favorite. As long as I am not carrying anything that will be damaged by water, then all is well. Specifically during typhoons, when there is also strong winds, I love it is possible to go for a walk without meeting anyone. The dog seems to have a different opinion, but I am the master.
it is funny as hell to see them stand in the doorway afraid to venture outside even when it is not raining heavily. they just stand there blocking the entrance staring outside.
it's just water falling from the sky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have seen this in a lot of Asian countries, from what i have been told most people believe that they will get sick if the top of their head gets wet,
thats why you can see people trying to keep their head dry by holding a small piece of paper over their head,
I stand in the doorways till the rain slows because even if the rain is not to dangerous/toxic you never what the water gushing around your feet has picked up along the way!!
2 years ago i didnt care about it, then one day after walking around in the rain i got home and my feet were painful and i had some kind of chemical burn on them,
The rain in Shenzhen has been insane but has stopped for the time being.
I love the storms as long as I am at home or have my golf umbrella.
The GF would never even want to leave the house if it was raining...even a little.
I tell her it rains every freakin day...so you will never leave the house??
My only complaint is the difficulty is getting a taxi during a monsoon storm.
Most of the time the storms here are intense...no umbrella and you will be soaked head to toe in 5 seconds.
Ever since 1938 when The Wizard of OZ came out, Chinese people have been afraid of melting in the rain. Oh, I'm melting,,,
I've lived in Nanning now for nearly 3 years, Nanning is tropical and in the summer it rains on average about 4 times a week, with 'bloody hell' thunder storms about once a month ish. If I'm not working they're great, awesome and wonderful things, the rain quickly dries out in the 35C plus heat. However, if I'm going somewhere or I've got to work I really don't want to turn up to class looking like a semi-drowned rat, it really isn't a very professional look, so I do my best to stay dry, I assume most of the locals running for cover have the same idea. However I do see some locals who are wearing just shorts and a t-shirt (rolled up over their bellies for many men) who I assume are unemployed, retired or manual workers seem to quite enjoy getting a good soaking.
