Once a small fishing village, Qingdao is now a large and important city and is actually home to the fourth biggest harbour in the whole of China. Qingdao is an inventive city with a true enterprising spirit, which has been responsible for bringing considerable wealth and prosperity to the area.

Qingdao is now home to more than 1.5 million inhabitants, meaning that life is quite different to its rather colloquial fishing-village past. Today, Qingdaois a modern and rather charming city, with a historic old town district, areas of commerce and industry to the east, and many high-rise buildings. Here are some helpful travel tips relating to life in Qingdao.

Qingdao has very hot, breezy summer and rather cold, longish brush winters.  It can be quite humid at all times.  The city is beautiful, in and of itself, and scattered about town you might be able to see many of the buildings built by the Germans was Qingdao was administered by the Germans as a concession.

It has a good name among the expats up here and it's other competitor for city-most-preferred-by-expats in the Northeast is Dalian.  High speed rail connections to Beijing and the rest of the country are excellent.  A subway is being built throughout the city but win't be ready until 2016 at the earliest. It has an international airport but the airport is in reality mainly used for domestic flights.  There are sizeable Japanese and Korean communities in the city.  Walmart, Metro and most major fast food restaurants are well-represented throughout the city.

Compared to the rest of Shandong, which is still stuck in a mindset 60 years old, Qingdao is an up-and-coming place with a mindset more open to the world than the rest of the province.

As for lack of rain, it's a little strange but not that unusual.  The city does have four distinct seasons but with the four distinct seasons, there is a dry season -- usually autumn and winter -- and  a rainy season -- usually spring and summer.

Jobs for teachers pay more than in the rest of Shandong Province but less than in other parts of the Northeast, say Shenyang and Harbin, because Qingdao is one of those places where there is more supply of foreigner teachers available than jobs open.  This in turn keeps the wages down.  Some of the university jobs are located way out in the boondocks so if you are thinking of a university job, please be sure to ask first about the location, the specific location.

If you are considering one of the Korean International Schools in Qingdao, be aware, and be very, very aware.  I personally wouldn't touch them at all as they have truly nefarious reputations among the expats.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
