Well i'll tell you the same thing that I tell all my own students; if you're afraid of making mistakes there is one, and only one, way to avoid them, and that is to stop learning a foreign language. In 8 years of teaching i've learnt one valuable thing, and that is that the students who make the most progress are always the ones who speak out, and don't give a shit about making mistakes. My wife has won national English speaking competitions on two or three occasions, and her English sucks. I mean, you can have a fluent and intelligent conversation with her on any subject, but she makes loads and loads and loads and loads and loads and loads and laods (that one was deliberate) of mistakes. She just doesn't give a rat's arse. (That means she doesn't care.....because it's not important). The people who laugh are the pussies who are afraid of making mistakes too. Make them loudly and proudly.

I'm always making mistakes with my english and many other things and will do until die.   C'est la vie.

And it's good fun!!!!!

I went home to Canada and have to stay longer than I thought, I want to learn Chinese, so come on over and we'll have language exchange. Just put on the visa form that you wish to do exchange with Ted, everybody knows me.

That is a little naive. This person has made it quite clear their intentions for wanting to meet foreigners.

I know many many many Chinese people, but I can say I have but a handfull of genuine Chinese friends.

Brenda,You'd better post your question "Who wants to exchange languages"

In this way,You can teach her or him mandarin and he or she can teach you English back.

Or you can go to some English corners in Guangzhou, not many tho, probably you will  find someone who wants to practice English with you.Give yourself a try.

Always remember that there is NO free lunch.

Good luck.

Hey Brenda. What you should do is find a place where foreingers hang out that doesn't serve alcohol. Maybe a coffee place near you or something. Most foreingers will be friendly. So just say hello!

You can try couchsurfing.com . The site has a forum especially for people in Guangzhou (foreigners and Chinese) who want to exchange languages.
