Q: If you're in your home country, how GOOD would it feel to?

Now if you arrive home in the U.S or England or even Iran.

And lets say one day you're walking around the mall and you spot some Chinese tourist shopping, now they are Chinese because by now your ears can pick it up.

So the question is: How good would it feel to walk by and say: "Wow, Wai Guo Ren", add a touch of Snoop Dog voice to it.

In one month I hear the term "Wai Guo Ren" maybe 30 to 60 times.

I just can't wait to vacation back home and get this Chance. It will feel sooooooooo good.

I had a friend tell me how he did basically that. He yelled niiii  haaaaaaoooo laowai in a falsetto voice at some Chinese tourists.

Then when everyone, including the tourists turned and looked at him like he was a complete dickhead he realized how stupid he felt.

Resist the urge mate,it's not worth it. You'll just feel like you became the type of idiot that you look down on when they do it to you in China.

I'm a human being with a soul, being rude and racist does not make me feel good. I understand you and where it's coming from because I often feel the same way when experiencing Chinese traditional harassment.

ironman510:

Its not rude, its their language. Rude would be when you add another word that is rude.

I did something a little different when I went home.

There were some local Japanese & Thai food restaurants. They were okay, nothing special... and obviously not authentic... why?

Cause all the people there were speaking Mandarin. It is a smaller city, so most locals wouldn't have a clue if they were Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese or whatever...

But I knew right away when I heard them speaking Mandarin with the mainlander accent. Anyway, they were not serving very well and seemed kind of lazy... They also seemed to be making comments about the patrons. So I decided to pay the bill and get out. I go up to them and I say "Ni hao, mai dan ba! (Hello, would like to pay the bill)"... they looked like someone stuck them with a taser, it was hilarious.

I repeated it, and I knew I was speaking it perfectly... so they finally replied and asked me how many languages I spoke and everything. I asked them why all the supposed Japanese & Thai food places in the city were all actually run by Chinese. They said cause it was popular in this city aand the locals were too ignorant to know the difference.

Suffice to say, I started telling everyone in town just how these "Japanese & Thai" people thought of them.

Ironman, I also had this period in my life when I paid attention to that. Maybe it was because I still enjoyed my stay in China back then and didn’t understand why would people think it’s their right to point out at me or laugh in my face only because I am a foreigner, but now I do realize that China is only a springboard for my future and I expect absolutely nothing positive from the remainder of my stay here.

The standard behavior towards a waiguoren in China is a kind of a behavior which is not accepted as normal in any other country or displayed only by people coming from the lowest rugs of the society. I’ve used to travel a lot in my life and been to many developing countries, of course local people paid attention to me being a foreigner, but I have never felt as harassed as here. In most cases people simply wanted to take a photo with me, or have some chit-chat. Oh my, how pleasant it felt. From my own experience you can sometimes get positively surprised when travelling in the countryside in China. In my case almost always when out of Beijing local people wanted to know me, joke, take a photo or a shot of baijiu with me instead of treating me like a white idiot (standard behavior when travelling on subway in Beijing).

In general, I would not recommend anyone coming to China for a long period, maybe 1 year is fine, but no longer than that (after that you want to take roots in a local society and expect people to treat you more or less as one of them). Chinese worldview simply doesn’t allow a foreigner to be equal to them, even if he can speak Chinese. I can communicate in Chinese and people understand me, but you won’t believe how many times people who didn’t speak a f….. single foreign language made fun of my accent. For someone expecting any cultural standards to be followed it’s unacceptable and simply hurts, while making you feel that no matter how much you try you will never belong here. Can you imagine a shopkeeper in the USA openly making fun of his Chinese customer’s accent? It would give some media channels weeks of content about racism, white supremacists and so on, when at the same time it’s a normal behavior in China. If that idiot foreigner wants to come to our great country then he has to suck up our superior behavior.

Yeah. The main difference is that Chinese people have equal rights in China and abroad, which you can’t say about “shabi laowai” in China. If you watch Chinese TV you can easily realize that foreigner is either a threat or a monkey to star in some stupid show where he can discuss with other laowai how many times a day people in the West shit or why they like to eat apples. Jokes about Western politicians or foreign way of life are also welcomed and encouraged.
If you behave towards Chinese people abroad in the same manner they behave towards you in China, then the CCTV is going to make 10 articles and 5 videos about racism towards the Chinese people in the West, when no media (Western included) ever mention the way Chinese people behave towards foreigners. Some say it’s just the ignorance of people coming from the countryside, but exposed to the same treatment they show towards foreigners they surprisingly don’t exhibit any ignorance and get easily offended, how do you call this behavior then?

RandomGuy:

The standard behavior displayed towards Foreigners in China stems from envy and jealousy. It's a small-man Napoleonic syndrome expressed through passive-aggressive behavior to single out whom they see as competition, be it for women or jobs or opportunities. Chinese are well aware that the presence of any Foreigner around, even low class as can be, makes them look like the bottom of the barrel by comparison. That's why they feel the urge to make the Foreigner look bad, to put him down in order to raise themselves up. They don't need any real reason to do so, it's a subconscious aspect of their mind that 'us' (Chinese) should dominate 'them' (Foreigners). And they are trying way too hard for it to appear natural. tldr; Chinese are aware of their own shortcomings and try way too hard to put Foreigners down, makes them look like spiteful losers.

Robk:

You are pretty much correct, I have noticed that it is slowly changing and they are realizing their the behavior is not appreciated. How?

Simply through travel to other countries and seeing the reactions of others. They now realize that they are being scorned and ridiculed, losing face for their country. Many relatives who live abroad discuss these things with mainlanders back home.

However, I believe a foreigner can never fully be integrated in Chinese culture... I think I have come about as far as possible. Married a national, bought a place, learned the language, spent a lot of time in her village, learned all their customs and behaviors (even the reasoning for them). But I will always be treated as a guest... welcome or not...

There are many 'foreigners' who speak really good Chinese (or sufficient to understand when they are being mocking).

How about, when it starts, record it (preferably on video)... then tell them you'll be uploading to <insert name of site - especially FB and Weibo> so that the whole world can see how ignorant they are. Tell them to search for it, and to read all the comments being posted by their own countrypeople...

Very few Chinese in Germany, but we do have a fair amount of Koreans and Japanese, I guess we got the lucky draw on that one.

Chinese seem to like moving to Anglo countries the most.
