Q: Im traveling home to America, what things should I bring back here.

I've lived in Changsha for the last 3 years and I'm FINALLY making the trip home this Christmas to see my folks and take care of some business. I already have a decent list of things that I want to bring back but im sure I am forgetting some things that will haunt me if i forget. So, what things would you love to bring back from the US that you cant find in china. (obvious weight restrictions apply, so no grand pianos or baby elephants haha)

Mr. Spoon, are you saying there is something wrong with American cheese?  We even go through the effort of slicing it very thin and packaging it in plastic.  Of course, now that I think about it, the cheese does taste like plastic.

sam239:

US has burgeoning supplies of traditional European "gourmet" items like beer, wine, and cheese. Fine cheese is made across the country, particularly in New England. I read that US craft beer is rapidly gaining popularity in Germany, for example. Most cheese in the US is processed crap, but there is very good cheese there as well. I know because I wrote a thesis on it during my uni days and visited small stock producers.

I'm just messing with you guys, I'm sure there must be some quality cheese in the States as well. But wasn't there something about banning French cheese recently, or something like that?

It would probably be worth the profit if you bring back a suitcase filled with baby formula powder.

Books on Chinese history from a Western point of view, secondhand contemporary novels in English, translated or not, chocolate and cheese (available in China but much more expensive) and socks and shoes for different seasons in the right size.

Non-whitening cosmetics & skin care products, non-toxic shampoo and shower gel - preferably the eco kind, a jar of real honey, good instant coffee, comfy underwear, socks & shoes as mentioned already, good deodorant, snacks and chocolates you can give to people here as presents, an updated playlist of good music...

1. 2-year supply of Hanes 100% cotton underwear: T-shirts, V-necks, boxers/briefs, gym socks.  Cheap.

2. 4-to-6 pairs of Levis blue jeans (or Wrangler or Lee...).  About 1/3 the price as in China.

3. 50/50 Hanes sweatshirts in a variety of colors ($3 at a big box store)

3. Kitchen utensils that will last a lifetime and not 6 months; especially knives: chef's, paring, bread, etc.

4. If you are a teacher, the latest (cheap) teaching gizmos, books, blue tac, etc.

5. Your favorite organic spices and herbs for cooking at home.

6. Generic OTC meds for whatever ails you periodically.  (I like Zantac & Ibuprofen.)

7. French cheese.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
