Q: Is it common for Chinese men to romantically propose after you've already decided to marry?

I knew a Chinese couple who were about to get married. There hadn't been a romantic proposal. They and their family had simply decided that it was time to tie the knot. So about a week before the wedding at a bar, the groom took up the mic and "proposed" even though they were already engaged. Is this common and is it another example of how they got their imitation of Western culture wrong?

Yes. The act of proposing appears to be a requirement despite already being married. Not sure if it is part of the "princess dream" of getting married or if it is a face thing.

I guess it is if you put it that way....nobody likes getting rejected and that's one sure way of not getting rejected. It's all planned out and everybody seems to know what they guy is doing. No surprise there except for probably the people in the restaurant who are don't know these strangers proposing!

During that night at the bar, did they invite friends and family? If so, it might have just been for the show. People here usually really don't know the fundamentals of the Western habits that they imitate. They just want to do like them, doesn't matter in what order. The groom might have just recently watched The Wedding Crashers and got an urge to do what Westerners do.

It's also ironic that this urge of imitating goes as far as wearing Western wedding clothes while white is the colour of death in Chinese culture.

Proposing happens when the couple meets the parents.

And if the parents approved it then they can get married.

That's how it works here.

But as a rule breaker, I proposed my guy and raped him too.

Mission completed.

Only dumb girls wait for men to propose and parents to approve.

And rules are for the dumb people.

I am the exception.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
