No, it is not illegal but it is not mandatory either for Muslim women in China to wear the Burka or Hijab. You have better chance to see elderly or married women wearing the Burka or Hijab.
I have been into quite a few Muslim resturants and have never seen a women wearing them. I thought that was unusual.
not illegal but who is going to force them , i only have seen older women wearing them
No here they don't have to, if they don't wear them the men here won't throw rocks at them until they die or throw acid on their face or light them on fire or whatever it is they do...
I live in a city with a Muslim minority and I have never seen this. I have been to a certain province out west where one might expect to see these kind of things and I have not seen it there either, not even remotely so.
So this remains a very valid question and yet the answer is not so clear. I can only wonder if it it would be really allowed or even permitted.
MissA:
Hi there, I live in Xinjiang, which I assume is the one you're referring to. I do occasionally see women wearing a hijab. Most women don't wear a hijab, but at the same time it's common enough not to be noteworthy when I see one. I just asked a Uyghur friend and she told me that it's not allowed in some schools or for government staff, so there are some restrictions.

Dear MissA: Thanks very much for the answer. It provided some good insight into the question. Kind regards, 981
It's not illegal, Muslim women (and their men) are just not fanatical in the way some Arab traditions of Islam are. The Sufi-based Islam mostly found in the West of China is a much more tolerant example of the faith than you'll find in discussions on Fox News.

Thank you for the insight. I still can't but help wondering what the official reaction would be ... I don't think that it would be overly positive though ... just IMHO.

I do see a small number of women, young and old, wearing approximations of the burka, especially in towns with much less of a Han culture influence. But it's not at all common, the women much prefer to wear Western or more traditionally uyghur clothes.
