You mean like an official name, or one that you call yourself?

For my Chinese drivers license I had to choose a Chinese name because 90% of English names wouldn't fit.

Unless you need it for buying property or driving licence, the only reason a foreigner would get a Chinese name is because he's a sad, loser, wannabe, desperate to ingrate themselves to people who would laugh at their pathetic failure in life.
Or of course, you may be a student studying Chinese. Otherwise you would be a wanker.

Passport number.

I am married here, bought a house, have Chinese wife, Chinese daughter, she goes to Chinese school... passport number.

I have a Chinese name somewhere. Maybe on my daughters birth certificate. It counts for jack shit. China works on numbers.

19 digits apparently.

I thought it was cool when the Head master of a college in Shijiazhuang gave me a Chinese name. The students thought it was cool too. "Sheng An Dong" I think it is more for social functions. Nothing official. You can actually figuresmiley out my real name just by translating.

I don't know if it was every province but back in the day they needed a Chinese name for visa purposes.

I remember doing a medical test with a few other foreigners, the doctors would call us into the rooms by our Chinese names which were on all the forms.

I used to think it was a stupid idea.

But then I bought a TV from Suning....they wanted my name for delivery.

Errrrrrr......No chance of them getting my English name. Its just too long....

So on the spur of the moment I went with Yingguo Ma Tai. (England Matthew)

Easy enough...
Then I thought maybe I do need one.
So I chose Gao Ma Tai. (高 马太)

Gao because I am 1.93 and all I hear is "Hao Gao" and also Gao is a Chinese surname. Job done....
