Q: Is it OK to throw away my MILs Mao statue ?

Without telling her that is. The atrocity is in a cupboard in her place, behind some other stuff. Standing there like an unwanted, sick version of an Oscar. OK to throw out other peoples stuff? Back home a no no, but what about in China ?

it could be involved in an 'accident'.

If there are children around that can't articulate clearly, you have your alibi.

maybe have another more acceptable statue on stand-by to replace it after the tragedy.

As much as i dislike some of the statues/pictures in my friends homes, i just blank them out.

like selective hearing, i also employ selective vision

it's metal, oh had it only been ceramic.... maybe if it fell out of the cupboard, onto the street and got run over, a typhoon can do that right ?

Are you mad ? Keep it, it might become a very precious piece of history. My Dad bought a Saddam watch, a Saddam belt, etc. people thought it was crap in the early 80's. But now ? People think it's worth more than it's weight in gold.

Crappy plaster statue as gift from wife's friend... Why we don't have earthquakes in Jiangsu, the perfect alibi :(

Scandinavian:

you never been to a gas station where, apart from gas, bottled water, all they sell is small Mao's ?

Where can I sell Saddam stuff for 'its weight in gold"? Cuz I can buy that stuff cheap all day every day.

Can you link me to a website or two?

@bill I did not mean it literally, I just mean that now, those objects have more *sentimental* value than in the past. I've no idea of much such things are valued nowadays.

You could always switch it with a Jabba the Hut. She might not even notice.

Take it right before you're going to your home country to visit. Pretend it's some sort of contraband and live out the life of a spy/smuggler.

Scandinavian:

I did think about "rescuing" it from the pollution and have it resurface as a nice gift to a friend back home

Why would you think that it is acceptable to do something in china that you wouldn't even consider at home?  Are you THAT assimilated into the Chinese method of thinking?

Didn't Mao once decree that all metal objects should be smelted down to help the war effort against Taiwan?

There you are - you are only following his wishes! wink

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
