Q: Is it possible to ask for a background check from China?

a potential new employer asks for a background check, and im wondering if i have to go back to the states to get that done or whether i can just ask for it at an embassy/consulate/online, etc.

Most employers are the ones that do the actual background check.  You shouldn't have to do anything.  But, if there is something particular they want from you, then they should be able to tell you what it is exactly and where to get it.  (For example, diploma, single certificate, etc...)

For an actual FBI background check, you have to get fingerprinted and send it in the mail along with the necessary form. It takes 6-8 weeks. I'm currently waiting for mine because it's required to get a job teaching English in Korea. However, I don't think a real one is required for a job in China. I would ask them to be more specific. They probably just mean a simple online background check, but I'm not sure why they wouldn't do it themselves.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
