easy to get a masters degree, but is it worth anything depends on the school and where you plan to hang your hat when you finish. ask your future employers and hr agents in your home country first before you waste time and money.

pakistan students come here for medical degrees and go home to be doctors, american students come here to be doctors and new york will give them a medical license and they work for a few years and move the license to another state.

every situation is different.

I used to teach to a top Chinese university, for master students, in science & engineering topics. I also did a post-doc.

If you go in the best universities (top 5), your degree will be recognized by immigration departments around the world. A diploma from small provincial universities won't be automatically recognized. For employers, that might be a different story, I don't have experience about that. The topics taught is on par with what I experience in Europe... but the teaching is subpar (teacher doing not much more than reading his slides, teacher not updating his/her material) and the grading is a sad joke (awfully inflated, keep the student happy as far as they do a token effort). It's mostly rote learning with very little interaction. You can learn, but it will be mostly from your own self-motivated study rather than the teacher. Homework assignment can be very sloppy yet they are graded as very good. There are exception to this rule, but you have been warned...

If you wish to be in research topic, choose the department wisely, investigate the notoriority of the labs associated to the department. If the lab you are aiming for have regular publications in the top journals in the relevant topic, it can be nice. You will do your master intern work (and eventually PhD) in a good environment. Most good Chinese students choose to do their PhD abroad, there's a reason for this : apart from those good key labs, the others mostly suck.

I don't know your motivation to have a degree in China. If it's for Chinese language studies, sounds like a good idea. For science topics, I'm not sure if it's a good bet... Unless you can self-study, you have good rote learning abilities, and you just want to have a diploma to have an official paper to acknowledge your skills & expertise. Myself, I would be a terrible student in China (I'm bad at rote learning, I learn best through tutored self-exploration) I did well in Europe. Studying in Europe was much cheaper for me (mostly state sponsored).

It all depends on what you will major in and what you mean by nice.  In general a master's degree here would be worth less than one done back in the U.S. where I am from but that being said there are some worthwhile here.  Let us know what you wish to study and we can answer better.

I did a master degree in China at a top 5 university.

The academic level was really low, but there were still interesting classes and world class guest lectureres.

A degree in China makes sense if you plan to work in China, or at the very least work with China. To get anything out of a degree in China you need to put in a lot of effort on your own. Study and read by your own, build a network and learn the language. Also try to get work experience through internships if you can (although it is illegal to work in China on a student visa). Also try to have at least a 2 year gap in your CV, easier with a Z visa that way.

Whether a master degree in China is a good idea will be up to you, and your goals.

I actually did my bachelor's degree in China and I can speak Chinese. I do not want to do my master's degree just for having an official paper to acknowledge my skills & expertise. I'm interested in psychology & design and while living in Beijing I was thinking about to do it here. But probably I'll do it in Europe. All of your answers are very helpful. Thank you very much!

Of course you can do a Master's degree in China... and the whole world will recognise it as coming from a legit, top 100 university...

Just do it online from oh so many overseas universities Laughing out loud :D (psychology might be a bit of a problem, though...)

My personal idea about doing a Master's in China is that it is something that can add a nice little flair to your resume at the very least. If you're doing engineering, math of some sort, or sciences then probably it would be better to just go hardcore in a university in your own country, learning it all to a T and not having to deal with the annoyances and troubles of taking the classes in a second language. (Sure, you can speak Chinese, but really understanding everything taught in a second language pertaining to very specialized subjects is a different matter in itself)

If you're doing something liberal artsy, then sure, go for it, that would not give you too many headaches.  The degree would get you noticed at very least.  It's important to put in a huge effort into your education and mental growth, though.  Simply attending university in China will not develop you academically like the Western system does.   The more work you put in the more value you can give to your own degree.  I personally think that in China, it is more so the case that it is the individual that makes the degree.

Don't bother. It takes 2.5-3 years to get a masters in China that won't be that internationally recognised. You can do a masters in a much shorter time in other countries, and the level of teaching you will receive should theoretically be better.

Burak43:

You can do english taught Master's in China in 2 years. Hell, you can even finish it in 1 year and do one year of internships, language study, travel, work or whatever you want to do.

Or you could go to the US and do it in two years, or the UK and do it in one year, and have a better piece of paper to show people.

"Piece of paper to show people" just about sums up the value of a Masters degree anywhere. Everybody has bachelors degrees these days since it's become such a big deal to get everybody a college education. Masters have therefore become the new bachelors; they're the extra step you take to differentiate yourself from the crowd. Its really the individual that gives value to the degree in my opinion. If you show up and go out partying all the time then by the time you get your price if paper you will probably know even less than when you got here. You gotta push yourself a lot here since the system won't do the pushing for you. I'm making some base assumptions of course, that the program isn't a new money grabbing scheme filled with fake teachers ( high ranking institutions are not immune).

You are mistaken. Degree from PKU, Tsinghua, and Renmin University carry full accreditation internationally in 39 countries. Where did you get your info?

You obviously don't live in the real world. Being fully accredited and actually having an employer see it as a decent education (better than one you could achieve in the west) are two different things.  Unless of course your did your masters in Chinese language. Then it would certainly be better than a Chinese masters from the US or UK.
