Q: Is it possible to work in China and make decent money?

I've heard this all the time: "If you go to China, it's not for the money". But with all the money that's bouncing around, all these new businesses, is it still true that working in China will ALWAYS be a financial loss compared to what you'd be earning back home?

If that were true, wouldn't no one come to China to work?

Get sent here by a Western company. That's when you hit the jackpot! Especially if you make it seem like a huge hassle. They'll give you a great salary, healthcare, flights, accomodation and other perks like a driver and/or car. It just depends on which company you work for, and how much money that company has.
But don't come here and look for a job unless you're under 25. You'll only meet disappointment and regret.

First of all what amout is decent for you ?
for me even 2-3 thousands dollars per month is a decent amount .
But since i am not a westerner its almost impossible to earn that much ..
if you are a westerner (usually white) then you earn that easily ..

you can make money any where you want.... where ever the fate have written for you. earning money in china YES......... if you are smart and witty you can do job, earn good amount of money but do not compare your self with chinese. there are many things in which comparing oneself with them is totally ridiculous and baseless. higher salary depends on your experiences and skills and the most important-the company you choose for yourself or whatever the company offer you job... so good salary and job does depends on many things.............

Find a job in a specialized field that Chinese are not specialist in. Or have international entrepreneurship

Not everyone comes to China to make more money than they did back home. This is the mentality that is causing so many people in the West so much misery. This singular focus on money, money, money is making many people miserable. I came here because I can make a decent living, work far fewer hours, and not worry so much about the safety of myself and my family. I have a Master's Degree in Finance / Economics and can speak 4 languages fluently but I guess I would be considered a "loser" here on this forum because I have opted out of the high stress business world and have chosen to live a life of fewer material possessions but a much higher happiness quotient.

So, the answer to your question is: No, people like me would still choose to come to China to enjoy the lifestyle, even if our salaries might be lower.

That depends on what you will do in China,

If you just want to work as teacher, sure you will not get good money, the money which you get here will give you good life here with almost no saving

If you work for a foreign company, that will depend on what education and experience you have, if your ability is high enough, you could got some good job

The last option is if you work for yourself, here you can make really good money if you are: active, business mind, understand the needs of your local market and have the minimum capital to start in China

General speaking, China is business country, if you are good in this field you could do something good, if just go to the education field you will just be here to enjoy your time and have new life

Not a chance unless you have your own business, and by own, I mean no Chinese partners.  Look what happened to the owner of Kro's Nest Pizz in Beijing.  If you have a Chinese partner and they see you are growing big, they will find some devious way to squeeze you out.  I sincerely believe Chinese only want to use, copy, and discard us like yesterday's newspaper once they let us take all the risk and prove that the business model works.

If you have your own business you can make a ton of money here - until some Chinese with deeper pockets than yours copies you.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
