might be the time to bring this up....  lotsa info online if u want to learn more about it.

tip for the newbies:  when u see 'em rubbing the 100rmb note between their fingertips, it's not just another odd chinese superstition/ritual... they are checking to see if the bill is real or not.  chairman's collar is rough feeling compared to rest of the note.

it is possible because you can make cash deposits to an atm and the next person gets your deposited money before the bank ever sees the money, some machines are better and checking the bills. ccb atm's actually record the serial number of every bill to check for duplicated fake copies.

I got zipped at a branch of ICBC  bank.  I was lucky the bank guard was helping me navegate the process (no English version) when I got 5 fake 100 yuan bills.  When complained, the manager said I brought the bills with me and refused to exchange.  But guard confirmed they came out of ATM.

Just yesterday, I did my monthly withdrawal, from my home bank card, at a Bank of China ATM, and then just put it back in my BOC account. The ATM that just gave me the money, refused to take it all back as a deposit. It said something like "these bills are illegal". It was just 2, 100RMB  bills,, so the local market will get them soon.

what you're supposed to do is check all the bills before you leave and hold up the fake bill to the camera on the ATM, then you can make your case to the teller/manager that you got a fake one from their machine cause it's on video.

It sucks it has to be like that, but if it wasn't than youd get bums coming in with fake bills demanding they get switched for real ones.

This has never happened to me, I feel like the machines probably do a decent job of not accepting fake ones (in fact they reject my real ones all the time!) but i had a buddy who that happened to and he had to go through that procedure.

So check the bills before you leave and if they are fake hold up the fake ones to the camera showing the numbers and stuff. Then you got a video record of you getting the bogus bills from their ATM and that is their responsibility.

Yes, 3 years ago in Hua Qian Bei, Futian, Shenzhen, there were ATMS that did two things, 1. Steal the password and 2. Give fake notes.
